As a result, myopia - nearsightedness, where far away objects appear blurry - is rapidly increasing. Stronger glasses every year aren’t the answer. While necessary, glasses only treat the symptoms of myopia. And, myopia increases the risk of serious eye diseases as your child grows. A business partnership morphed out of the mother-daughter relationship of Lisa and Jamie Thompson. With combined skills in graphic and textile design, and daughter Jamie’s desire to have more freedom from her corporate design job, the two created online children’s retailer Oh Bessie. With patterned animals, cute sayings and bold colors, the Oh Bessie products are both quirky and whimsical. Technicolor stars and hearts, abstract animals and romantic sayings like “I love your guts,” are just a few of the designs the team has conjured up. There are onesies for wee babies, and shirts for toddlers. They also have a selection of brightly colored growth charts and stationery. “We like to be cheeky and not take things too seriously,” said Jamie, who does most of the design work. “I try to put patterns in all of my designs.” Jamie, the youngest of Lisa’s four children, also likes her designs to challenge the norm. “I love finding undertones of weirdness in things,” she said. “Why does a monkey, that’s going to be displayed in a baby’s room, have to have the same size eyes? Why does everything always have to be so perfect?” The monkeys sure enough have different sized eyes. The zebras’ stripes have triangles, too. And the octopus says, “I want to hold your hands.” The name itself came from Jamie’s brand of quirkiness. The mascot is Bessie the Cow, but Jamie has no recollection of ever petting a cow let alone being close to one in her lifetime. But, as an adolescent, she did used to call out “Oh, Bessie!” as a phrase of consternation or excitement. Lisa remembers this phase, and naming the business after that seemed perfect. Both Lisa and Jamie juggle other work commitments in addition to running Oh Bessie. But starting up their own business, and seeing the products from conception to completion has been a great learning experience. Being both on the creative side, they had to receive on-the-job training in skills like marketing Quirkiness | Page 12 washingtonFAMILY.com  September 2017  11 Quirkiness | from Page 11 and accounting. “These are things we have no background in. So it’s like, ‘All right. Time to take a stab at social media,’” laughed Jamie, who lives in Washington, D.C. “Which needs more than a stab,” Lisa chimed. “Actually, I think it needs to be strangled.” They also had to learn how to juggle and manage this new relationship. It’s become more collaborative. “Sometimes when I tell people I have a business with my mom, they look at me like I’m crazy,” Jamie said. And she admits, that sometimes she feels like this might be a crazy endeavor, but she enjoys the honesty and openness that comes with the partnership. However, their mom-and-daughter life has blended with their business. They agreed it was inevitable. In the beginning, there relationship seemed to revolve around the 12  September 2017  washingtonFAMILY.com business, so they had to work hard at disassociating themselves in certain situations. sometimes I feel like we are more like “There were times I just wanted to hang out with my mom, and not my business partner,” said Jamie. “I just wanted to do normal mother- daughter things.” relationship.” “You can’t really have a conversation anymore without me giving her an update or her telling me something she’s worked on,” said Lisa, a D.C. native who now lives in Rockville, MD. responsibilities of Oh Bessie. Knowing her daughter created such marvelous things and seeing them spark wonder in the eyes of others means a lot to her as a mother. “It has brought us closer, but business partners,” Lisa said. “But it has enhanced or broadened our Lisa acknowledges that starting a business is hard work. She’s had other ventures throughout her career, which prepared her for the couldn’t imagine taking on this endeavor when her four children were small. Oh Bessie has become her fifth child. “If someone were to go into business that their relationship is strong enough, that there won’t be negative repercussions from doing it,” Lisa said. “A few times along the way, I worried about it.” “The older I get, the more I realize what an amazing accomplishment it was for her to manage four kids’ schedules and raise them fairly successfully,” Jamie laughed. Lisa beamed. Check out their products at ohbessie.com. My toddler has been snacking on Beech-Nut purees since infancy, so I was happy to try out their other snacks with her and my youngest son who is 10 months old. Beech-Nut is a baby food company that specializes in selling food made with natural ingredients. Overall, my kids enjoyed the snacks and I was happy to note how the company lists the number of ingredients in large print on the front labels of their products. It helps me know that I’m feeding my kids snacks with fewer ingredients – and ingredients that I can actually pronounce. Blueberry Cereal Puffs: Even though my son will eat just about anything (he even ate a ladybug off the floor last week—Ahh!), I could tell he enjoyed these puffs more than the generic brand I normally buy because he ate nearly a quarter of the canister. I tried a few too, and noticed there was no “chemical” taste that you get from artificial sweeteners. Even though I try to stick to organic snacks (these are “natural,” as opposed to organic), I liked that there were only nine ingredients and that they were made with whole grain. Vanilla Quinoa Crispies: My toddler loved these snack bars. I tasted them too, and I think they taste like Rice Crispy treats. They are crispy and have a light vanilla flavor—perfect for satisfying a craving for crunch. I felt good about giving them to her because they’re also made with whole grain, and I just like the fact that she’s eating quinoa, something she would never eat in its whole form. 24  September 2017  washingtonFAMILY.com Strawberry Fruity Oat Bars: These ingredients! I had high hopes for these bars, especially because they’re made with only four ingredients, but my toddler wasn’t a fan. I tried a bite and while they’re not awful, they are a bit dry and very chewy. She’s used to those breakfast bars with the fruit filling, so perhaps we were just expecting something similar and were surprised Overall, the Beech-Nut brand of infant and toddler food is one that I trust and will continue to purchase because of their focus on natural ingredients, and adding as few ingredients as possible to each snack. I usually try to stick with all organic snacks when I can, but even though Beech-Nut isn’t all organic, I was very comfortable feeding my kids their natural variety. at the texture. Complete Whole Grain Oatmeal: Every morning, my son enjoys a bowl of oatmeal, and he really enjoyed Beech-Nut’s version. I mix his oatmeal with formula, and did not try this mixture myself. And What’s the Real Impact on Grades? E very day I speak to parents who are stressed out and confused. If you live in the D.C. area, you can probably identify with being “stressed- out.” But many are also confused at how their smart kids can be so scattered. These parents are confounded by the fact that their kid is really smart (heck, most of these kids can tell you a story a mile long, remembering every last detail, and some have even been in the gifted program), but their grades are mired in mediocrity because they are perpetually disorganized and procrastinate like crazy. Parents report that when left to their own devices without any parental oversight, these kids can’t keep up with their assignments and rarely study for tests, let alone remember when the tests are in the first place. And not surprisingly, when parents try to help, their overtures are resisted. It just doesn’t make sense. How can such a smart kid be so forgetful? Why is life with this kid so chaotic, with assignments left until the very last minute, stressing everyone out? And why, when help is clearly needed, do these kids push their parents away? The Real Reason Kids Are So Scattered Let’s start out with one of the most common reasons kids underperform in school — weak executive functions. Executive functions (EF) refer to cognitive processes occurring in the frontal lobe of the brain. They have to do with focus, problem solving, planning and organization. As you can imagine, these abilities are incredibly important in school. So when kids aren’t all that focused or organized and have a hard time thinking ahead, we often assume they’re lazy, unmotivated, or just don’t care about school. But actually, this isn’t the case at all. It’s often that 38  September 2017  washingtonFAMILY.com Continued on page 40 In business since 1985 Pre-K program, ages 2-5 www.childrensinternationalschool.com Locations in Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia 4347 Arlington Blvd, Arlington, VA 22203 1227 North Scott Street, Arlington, VA 22209 25 Quaker Lane, Alexandria, VA 22314 Enrolling tomorrow’s leaders today. ADHD vs. Poor Executive Functions Sometimes, parents wonder if a child with weak executive functions has ADD or ADHD, because the symptoms seem similar, and there definitely is overlap. A lot of kids have weak executive functioning abilities, but the problem might not be significant enough to warrant a diagnosis of ADHD. However, everyone with ADHD has executive functioning deficits. The Disconnect Between Ability and Achievement Regardless of whether your child just has weak EF or ADHD, it doesn’t really matter. The symptoms are similar, and there’s almost always a divide between ability and achievement. Kids with weak EF are capable kids who underperform. They have the potential to get A’s, but they’re earning B’s and C’s, stressing you out, and falling further behind. The work they turn in to their teachers is not always in line with their intelligence. We see this a lot in writing. Very verbal students have a tough time organizing their ideas and sustaining focus long enough to get all their thoughts down on paper. Now, not all kids who have executive functioning weaknesses have problems in writing, but what they almost always have in common is difficulty staying organized. Their binders, backpacks and even their bedrooms are not the tidiest in town. And so often, when things are scattered, time management isn’t so great either. Prioritizing is not a natural ability. The students we see don’t think 40 September 2017 washingtonFAMILY.com about homework in an organized fashion. They don’t think to ask themselves, “What do I have to do tonight? And what should I do first, second and third?” Getting organized enough to prioritize homework is tough for some, but what’s even harder is planning out that book report that’s due in two weeks or that science project not due for another month. What the Research Says: The Impact of Disorganization on GPA For years, we’ve been helping kids to get and stay a bit more organized, and it’s not an easy process. Most kids need regular upkeep to develop “habits of mind,” and for many, this takes a long time. As a classroom teacher, I always knew that the students who came to class prepared had a leg up. There was a clear difference between the ones who did their homework and had it filed away in the right folder and those who slapped down a few answers on a piece of paper and had to dig through their backpack to find it. But I never saw research on the impact of disorganization on homework completion. I just knew that my disorganized kids chronically underperformed, even if they could do well on tests (because they were indeed intelligent). Recently, I was reviewing some new research when I ran across a study from The Journal of School Psychology. Here’s what I found: Kids with attention difficulties turned in 12% fewer assignments than kids without attention problems. Although this doesn’t sound like a big number, the impact on grade point average for these kids was significant. The researchers found that the culprit wasn’t behavior during homework, like lack of focus, it was actually organization (bringing home the right materials, bringing the completed work back to class the next day, etc.). Disorganization was the most important predictor of homework completion and GPA. What You Need to Know The bottom line is that when your child has a poor sense of time and seems to have trouble keeping track of his things, it’s not intentional, and no amount of nagging or reprimanding him will help. Instead, what really helps is simply understanding that your child needs more structure than the average kid. Simple measures to set up routines and structures can work for all your kids. Personally, I’ve found simple systems to be the best, and that’s because although I love to be organized and tidy, I have to work at it. It doesn’t come naturally for me and I’ve found that other parents have similar struggles. By targeting a few easy-to-implement routines and strategies that can be done on autopilot, virtually any parent can help their child even if he or she is resistant. The key is choosing the right strategies and using them consistently. Both elements need to be present to see lasting and positive change. Crickets aren’t in Americans’ food repertoire primarily There are seven grams of protein in two tablespoons (12 grams) of cricket flour. By comparison, two tablespoons of peanut butter have eight grams of protein. Cricket flour is also rich in B vitamins, which are important to because of stigma. It’s important to help build tissues, make enzymes, produce hormone and repair muscles. Even our hair and nails are comprised of protein. For those trying to lose weight, protein is essential. It’s satiating—keeping the dieter fuller for longer. It helps cut cravings and aids with calorie burn. Many dieters decrease their carbohydrate intake and increase their protein.
