FAMILY blog T here’s nothing quite as unnerving as teaching your teenagers to drive. One minute you’re strapping them into their rear-facing car seat, and the next thing you know, they are the ones behind the wheel asking if you’re buckled in. It’s terrifying. Many of my teenage daughter’s friends are reluctant to get their learner’s permits. For whatever reason, they are content to have their parents, or other license- bearing friends, shuttle them around. Not my daughter. Technically, she was eligible for her permit on Christmas day. Since the DMV was closed for the holiday, we were in line bright and early on Dec. 26. She passed the permit test on her first try, and I white- knuckled it as she proudly drove us to Chick-Fil-A to celebrate. Her pride soon turned to panic as the relentless drivers around her impatiently honked and then passed her. I kept telling her she had to drive faster to keep with the flow of traffic. “But I’m going the speed limit!” she yelled back. This became an all-too-frequent exchange between the two of us as she learned to drive. I was constantly telling her to drive faster. Even though she was technically going the speed limit, I realized how much everyone around us was in a hurry. Myself included. booked solid. The kids are up early and off to school, and afternoons and evenings are filled with homework, school projects, after-school activities, sports practice…all the things that make our life busy, but also FULL. This fall, I’m trying to focus on and appreciate the blessings of a FULL family life and not get derailed by the overwhelming busyness of it. Sometimes it’s ok to slow down and follow the speed limit. What if every errand doesn’t get done, or we’re a few minutes late to practice? Life goes on. And maybe we’ve taken a moment to live it, rather than run through it. My daughter is now a full-blown licensed driver. I am proud to say she is very responsible, and luckily, did not pick up my impatient driving habits. Yes, teaching her was terrifying at times, but the payoff is huge. She drives herself to school, work, play rehearsals and swim practice. She also (reluctantly) helps shuttle her little brother around. Honestly, having a teenage driver in the mix is as life-changing as I feared it would be, but in a good way! Each trip she takes is one less trip I take. And I don’t take for granted any opportunity to avoid D.C. area traffic. So next time you’re silently cursing at the driver in front of you for going too slow, take a breath and try to relax. Use that moment to consider if you’re really in a hurry, or if you’re in a hurrying habit. Don’t honk the horn or yell as you pass. My daughter could be the one driving that car! Having to sit in the passenger seat made me reflect on my own bad driving habits – and how they reflect the way I live my life in and out of the car. As parents, we are constantly trying to get somewhere on time and fit in that one last errand. We rush from the bus stop to the dry cleaners to a doctor’s appointment. We cram in a trip to the grocery store before we have to drop off one child at soccer practice and then another at voice lessons. And then we get to do it all in reverse and pick everyone up again! As much as I try to tell myself to slow down, the days fly by. Local Pageant WINNER & Mom Encourages “Empowerment Through Entrepreneurship” What do you like most about living in the D.C. area? I LOVE everything about it! The international environment, the politics, the family-friendly atmosphere…there is so much to do with families! Can you describe an average day in your life? The average day in my life is busy. In the summer, I wake up with the kids, have a healthy breakfast and head to [the gym]. My kids love it there. I get to work out and then we usually stay for lunch and hit the pool. Each day is somewhat different with play dates or fun excursions. I love to be active with the kids — parks, hikes, picnics, museums — you name it, we’ve been there! I also have a business, so I spend time on that each day as well. The best part about my business is that I work it into my schedule and can take/receive calls, messages and orders on my phone anytime. What kind of preparation goes into competing in beauty pageants? Did you take classes? My focus on preparing for the Mrs. D.C. America Pageant and now the Mrs. America pageant is being in the best mental, emotional and physical shape I can be. If being in your bathing suit on a stage in front of a lot of people doesn’t motivate you, I don’t know what would! Joking aside, it feels amazing to be 38, having had three children and being in the best physical shape of my life. I didn’t take classes or get a pageant coach; I really just focus on being my most authentic self. I most definitely do not consider pageantry a competition with other women. I consider it a celebration of women— all different, all unique and all beautiful in many different ways. My only goal is to present my very best self, not only during a pageant, but at all times. How did you choose your platform, “Empowerment Through Entrepreneurship?” I have always enjoyed working with, supporting, and connecting women, and that is what I encourage and want to promote to our community. Women are the backbone to our society. We are intelligent, multi-tasking, creative and compassionate beings capable of anything. One woman can make a big difference in the lives of many. When women support and lift each other up, well, that is powerful thing. 12 September 2015 washingtonFAMILY.com Family photo: Jessica Funk Photography Family Photo on the waterfront: Mark Kanawati |

Integrating Liberal Arts and STEM: A Recipe for Well-Rounded Success TEXT Q. MARK REFORD I n such a relentlessly competitive global marketplace, most parents struggle with the same question: “How on earth do I prepare my kids for what they are going to face?” Parents are flooded with information on the best educational options and philosophies, and all claim their model is the best way to educate and equip their children for the future. Many parents are well versed in the core elements of a traditional, American liberal arts education from their own experience in college. They deeply value the literature, philosophy, history and political science classes they were lucky enough to attend. At the same time, STEM has become an educational buzzword and strong focus for many schools and universities. U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education, Jim Shelton, has this to say on the importance of STEM: “Everything we know about the way the world is evolving is saying that STEM is becoming a more important part of not only the technology sector, but every sector of the economy—and, frankly, solving most of the world’s most important problems.” Check out a university course catalogue and you will see STEM subjects in their various combinations increasingly dominate the offerings. Ask a university 16 September 2015 washingtonFAMILY.com admissions officer about the number of students interested in majoring in the humanities, and you might be shocked at how small it is in comparison to STEM fields. Should parents and students have to choose between a STEM-focused education and a deep immersion in the humanities and social sciences? The simple answer is, no. It is vital that young people learn to investigate and understand their world and its many problems and opportunities as scientists, armed with serious mathematical and technological competencies. Yet is that enough to ensure their futures and help them build lives for themselves? Consider how enriched the scientist’s questions might be by a knowledge of the theories philosophers have given to explain the mystery of our conscious experience of ourselves, of others and of the world. The fusion of liberal arts and STEM is at the core of a great, contemporary American education. So, when parents are touring schools to find the best fit for their children, I recommend they ask specific questions to discern whether the curriculum is an authentic fusion of STEM and liberal arts, including: • What are student-learning results on external examinations that can show me the quality of your math program? • When do you begin teaching the core scientific triumvirate of physics, chemistry and biology as separate, serious disciplines? • Is the math program integrated with the science program in earlier grades when students need to learn the real world applications of math competency? • When do students start the immersive study of a non-native language? Can they study more than one? • Are foundational components in the social sciences and humanities, like philosophy and economics, part of the school’s core curriculum, or just electives for an interested few? No parent can underestimate the importance of the answers given for their children’s future. Dr. Q. Mark Reford is vice chairman of global strategy for BASIS Independent Schools. BASIS Independent McLean is a preschool – grade 12 private school opening fall 2016 in Tysons, VA. 1. The kids are involved in the planning. I want them to be excited about opening and eating their lunch at school, so their opinions count. Ideally, we talk about lunch ideas 2. 7. And I’m always on the lookout for new ideas lunch packing fun and less of a chore. As they pack, I for foods we love to pack, and recipes that allow the kids to encourage them to try new foods and to “eat the colors of be flexible with the ingredients. the rainbow” by choosing a variety of fruits and vegetables, but ultimately, what they add to their lunch is up to them. 3. The five food groups. We aim for a balance of the five food groups. If researchers come to our school, my third- and fourth-graders’ lunches should pass the test and include all five! It’s a long school year ahead, but I hope my kids will be proud to say, “I made my lunch,” and I will be proud to send them to school with the meals they’ve packed. Here’s 4. Meeting USDA dietary guidelines (choosemyplate.gov). to a year of great lunches! The key idea here is making vegetables and fruits half of the plate or meal. Sometimes the lunches the kids pack will surpass this goal, and other times, they may fall short. Hopefully though, over the course of the week, our lunches will meet these goals. 5. Variety with some frugality. I stock up on seasonal produce and take advantage of grocery sales, so certain fruits and vegetables are incorporated into meals more than a few times when they are readily available. 6. Loving leftovers. After my two oldest pack their lunches, the remaining prepped food ideally becomes lunch or part of lunch for those of us eating at home (including myself, my preschooler and often, my husband). I am happy at noon when I can open the fridge and find that lunch is ready to eat. If I don’t use leftovers then, I may save them for dinner. At an orientation event, he became clearly unnerved as he struggled with the combination on a sticky locker. His concern, says mom, Lynn, was “whether he’d be able to open his locker during school when they only had four minutes between classes.” children with little experience outside the home may exhibit separation anxiety. “Being in the care of adults other than their parents can be initially stressful for some children,” notes Deb Cockerton, a child and youth behavioral counsellor. These youngsters also worry about practical matters, such as finding the bathroom and getting on the right bus. Needs Changes When they’re a bit older, children worry about whether they’ll have friends in their class and where they’ll sit at lunch. Older tween-age students are “concerned about how they will fit in with their peers, and how they will do academically,” says Cockerton. The start of puberty and issues like cyberbullying, body image and athletic ability may be additional stressors. ❏ (Mark changes on ad) What Kids Worry About Age, experience and temperament all Date Sent: determine a child’s concerns. Ray Some worries are not obvious to parents. Kerry Norris, principal and longtime educator, says, “There are always some things we don’t think of as adults… We’ve had little ones who are afraid to flush the toilet in the loud echo- prone bathrooms.” Older kids who are beginning to measure themselves against peers, may feel humiliated if they wear the “wrong” clothes or come to school with a “nerdy” haircut. Major transitions can cause feelings of insecurity, even if a child has previously done well. Lynn says that Colin was “extremely successful and a model student” during his elementary years. Yet, as a kid who “thrives on routine and predictability,” it took time for Colin to adjust to the new academic expectations, the more complicated schedule and the pre-teen social dynamics of his new school. |
• Meet and greet. Make introductions to teachers and other school personnel. Signs of Anxiety Kids express anxiety in many ways. Some are vocal and quite specific about their concerns. The tummy ache is a common symptom of stress in younger kids. But more often it is a child’s behavior that indicates distress. Cockerton says, “The younger child can become more ‘clingy,’ not wanting to leave mom’s side.” Older children can also suffer physical symptoms, such as headaches. They may eat more or less than usual when they’re feeling anxious, and Norris notes they may also experience sleep interruptions and moodiness. How Parents Can Help Kids feel more confident and competent when they come to school prepared. Experts like Cockerton and Norris agree that parents play a leading role in helping kids cope with back-to-school fears. Here are some ways to calm the jitters: • Brainstorm. Help your child build a repertoire of possible solutions to a problem. Colin, was anxious at the thought of changing into his gym clothes amongst other boys. She says, “We helped him figure out where he could change and feel he had some privacy.” • Play “what if…” What would you do if you forgot your lunch? What would you do if couldn’t find your homework? This technique gets even the youngest kids involved in problem- solving. As Principal Norris says, “Developing the skills to solve problems independently lasts a lifetime!” • Role play. Act out potentially uncomfortable interactions: What can you say if you want to be friends with someone? What can you do if someone is mean to you? • Talk to your child about what worries her. Provide accurate information if she is misinformed. • Resist overscheduling. Keep extracurricular activities manageable, especially during the first months of school. Kids need down time to unwind and reflect. • Listen carefully and respond empathetically. Avoid saying, “Don’t worry. You’ll be fine!” Focus on your child’s very real concerns. • Show confidence. Let your child know you trust her ability to succeed. Remind her of the many challenges she’s faced and managed in the past. • Create safe space. The tween who resists face-to-face conversation may “open up” at unexpected moments. Look for natural opportunities to listen and check in during daily activities— riding in the car, doing a chore, playing a game. • Check parental fears. As Cockerton says, “Children are very good at reading their parents’ emotions, and if the parent is worried about how their child will do at school, the child will interpret that as ‘something to be worried about.’” • Read books. Cockerton says books can give kids “language to express what they are feeling.” School-challenged characters can also normalize a child’s feelings. • Make home comfortable. Kids who are worried about a parent’s physical or mental health may be reluctant to leave home. When major life events (divorce, death, a family move) occur, maintain as consistent a routine as possible. • List it. Help kids refocus on the positive by listing the things they’re excited about as well as the things that scare them. • Talk to veteran students. If your child is starting at a new school, make contact with kids that have been there a year or two. Fears of the unknown can be calmed with accurate kid-to-kid info. Soothe the Stress with Belly Breaths! An anxious child tends to take quick, shallow breaths. A good self-calming technique is the “belly breath.” • Get help. If your child’s difficulties persist, “Networking with the school personnel is a critical piece of the puzzle. Open communication with school teachers, counselors and others is paramount to ensuring the most successful year possible.” HElpful Books For Little Ones: First Grade Jitters by Robert Quackenbush I Am Too Absolutely Small for School by Lauren Child Here’s how to do it: Kindergarten Rocks by Katie Davis Sit comfortably. An underlying of an Aidan Montessori education is to aid the in independence and by creating an that can unlock inherent potentials and within each child. embrace the Montessori pedagogy, which is based on universal principles of child development, as sound theory and practice for teaching and learning. And we look to accepted current research to inform our evolving understanding of human development. Recognizing the many differences in learning rates and styles, we believe in individualizing each child’s school experience for the fullest development of his or her potential. We embrace the concept of a multi-age, 3 years age span classroom community as optimum for academic, social and emotional learning. We value cooperation over competition and believe that each child’s work and behavior should be evaluated on his or her inherent capacity rather than by comparison. Our Montessori Tradition: Since its founding in 1961, Aidan has remained centered and steadfast in its mission as a Montessori school. Over the years, Dr. Maria Montessori’s ideas have had a profound effect and growing influence on education. However, while individual elements find their way into traditional programs, a fully implemented Montessori model is so comprehensive in scope and sequence that it is quite distinct. Aidan represents such an academic model and offers it as a clearly optimum environment for learning, for preparation for the future, and for developing the necessary skills and dispositions for citizenship in a democratic society. Mom Review: SoYoung Toddler Backpack M y preschooler is so excited to be toting his new robot backpack to school this year! The SoYoung toddler backpack is the perfect size for a preschooler’s needs. We easily fit a change of clothes, snack and his folder into the roomy compartment. An inside, zippered mesh compartment is perfect for storing smaller items, and the two mesh pockets on the exterior work great for holding a water bottle. The outside of the pack is made of linen coated with PVC and BPA-free plastic. Thanks to the coating, you can easily wipe it off should it fall in mud, or if a crayon is accidentally applied by a younger sibling (both happened within days of receiving this!). The inside is lined with nylon, which is also easy to clean. To test the backpack before school began, we loaded it up with toys for a road trip to Pittsburgh, PA. My son found the backpack very comfortable to put on and wear, even when full, as the straps are padded just enough. When it got a bit heavy, he was fascinated with the chest clip that helped keep it on and balanced. It also has a top handle, which made it easy to grab and carry when he didn’t want it on his back. In addition to the functionality, SoYoung has a collection of unique and kid-friendly designs. I was very happy with the overall neutral tone of the bag, with pops of color in the character or animal design. My son quickly chose the grey robot bag, but there are many other options— dinosaurs, rockets, birds, giraffes, horses and sharks, to name a few. The backpack is easy to spot among all the cartoon and superhero branded bags that appear each year. Coordinated lunch bags, which easily attach to the backpack, are available as well. TEXT CHRISTY PETRAK logical choice, but she wanted something unique. SoYoung manufactures diaper bags, toddler- and grade-school-size backpacks, lunch bags and cooler bags. All are designed with function in mind, as well as being eco-friendly. Linen is the eco-conscious material for the cooler bags, backpacks and coordinating lunch bags. SoYoung explains that linen is derived from flax, which “requires substantially less pesticides, as well as 20 times less water and energy than other crops to harvest and produce.” Learning this, I felt better about using this backpack than some of the other choices available. We are very happy with the SoYoung product and are excited to have it for my son’s 4 year- old preschool year! Pros: Easy to clean: Though it cannot be thrown in the washing machine (see con below), the plastic coated linen was extremely easy to wipe off, even crayons and ink. Lots of room: We were able to stuff the bag full of everything my son could possibly need. It also held a ton of toys for a road trip. Designs: If you are a fan of more muted, clean and classic designs, SoYoung is a great bet. Cons: Stiff: The backpack can be a little stiff, but seems to break in with use. Price: The price is a bit higher than some backpacks, but in range for a higher-end product. Cleaning: You cannot put this in the washing machine for a quick, simple all over wash. No branded characters: If your child likes branded characters, they might be disappointed, since only generic objects/ animals are available. Christy Petrak is a systems engineer currently taking a leave of absence to raise her two children, Thomas (4) and Eliza (1). She lives in Northern Virginia and enjoys SoYoung was founded by a “mompreneur” who gave up life in the financial world to pursue her dreams.
