But there’s something to be said for boots, hats and scarves. Not only is the look fashionable, but unlike in warm California, they’re must-have accessories for our chilly seasonal weather change. And the upcoming season just happens to be my absolute favorite: Fall. One of the things I cherish most about this season is our annual family trips to apple orchards and pumpkin patches. Once upon a time, my family did these outings in 80-degree weather wearing shorts and flip flops. It just feels right now that the weather (and attire!) fits the season. Another reason to love fall is football. Honestly, I am not much of a football fan myself, but my husband is, and it comes with the package so I am OK with that. There is something relaxing about hearing the football game on in the house while the kids are outside playing (not complaining about mosquito bites) and I’m in the kitchen trying a new Pinterest recipe. This sums up a typical autumn Sunday in my house. Speaking of recipes, slow-cooked stews, pot pies, hearty soups, roasts and casseroles are more reasons to love fall. Plus, now the beer, coffee and desserts are all pumpkin-flavored! What’s not to love about that? And you can finally light up fall-scented candles like “Sugar and Spice” and “Autumn in the Park.” All these amazing fall scents are so cozy and comforting. To top it off, how about the return of all your favorite TV shows? I love to snuggle up in my favorite blanket, put on a fire in the living room, light a candle and hit play on my DVR. Pure bliss! And how about the seasonal outdoor changes fall brings? The trees are stunning and the ground is 6  October 2015  washingtonFAMILY.com gleaming. The air is crisp and mornings are golden and misty. Just hearing the word “fall,” brings to mind images of brightly colored foliage. And who can resist jumping in raked piles of those beautiful leaves? It’s like a childhood rite of passage. (And the photo-ops make for great Instagram posts!) Last but not least, my absolute favorite thing about fall is also my favorite holiday: Halloween. From decorating to dressing up and trick-or-treating, I do it all! With a 9-year-old and a 4-year-old at home, I do not censor my Halloween décor one bit. I make sure my kids know the monsters and skeletons displayed all over the house are just for fun and not real. After all, Halloween is supposed to be spooky. In my house, that’s just the way it goes! Luckily, my kids enjoy the eerie stuff just as much as I do. This year we moved to a new neighborhood and I volunteered to host our neighborhood’s first pre- trick-or-treating block party in my front lawn. Let the Pinterest mania begin! Themed snacks include blood- spatter cookies, vampire-bite cupcakes and mini- donut spiders. Spider-lit centerpieces, mummy jars and a makeshift graveyard are just some of my ideas for my horror-house in the making. I can’t wait! After 90 days of summer, I always look forward to fall. No matter what your fall favorites are, I wish you fun times and warm memories. I’m off to try some new recipes, jump in some leaves and scare up some Halloween screams. Hurray for fall! Harassment, intimidation and bullying behaviors among children and youth are a peer phenomenon, so kids are usually reluctant to talk with adults about it. Families and schools need to build in times and structures to help facilitate youth talking about their experiences, both positive and negative. Young people need to feel like they have an adult to whom they can turn if they are the target of bullying. They also need ways to feel safe expressing concerns about their peers’ bad behavior. 5. What to do? Families and schools can create the conditions for youth voice by developing and reinforcing widely-shared, positive social norms (core ethical values), providing ways for all students to make valued contributions to the well-being of others, and implementing programs that regularly give youth a chance to speak their minds in a safe environment. Ask your kids how things are going at school, and stay tuned for signs of trouble with peers. Let them know directly and indirectly that they are not alone and you are available to help them. Encourage them to be kind to others who are different than they are. Let teachers and school officials know you support their bullying prevention efforts and programs, and hold them accountable for responding with care and appropriate consequences when bullying occurs. [ 6 tips for parenting in the Digital Age ] 16  October 2015  washingtonFAMILY.com TEXT DR. GREG W. MCGREW L ook around these days and you will often see very young children playing on mom or dad’s tablet or smart phone. Recent studies have showed that 38 percent of babies under the age of 2 are using an electronic mobile device, and over 40 percent of parents report their children spending three or more hours per day on these digital screens. 4. Apply blue light filters to any digital devices your child uses. The high-energy blue light emissions from digital screens may be just as harmful to the eye as UV light from sun exposure. The risk to children is even higher since they hold the screens closer and have pristine clear eye tissues that allow more light to reach the back of the eye. While today’s technology offers a myriad of great options for educating and amusing children, parents need to make sure their tech-savvy kids are protected from the potentially harmful effects of excessive screen time. As an optometrist, my focus is on their developing eyes, but as a father, I know it’s equally as important to consider the effects on their growing bodies and minds. Blue light filters are available as a clear transparent film that is easily applied to the screen surface, and double as protection for the screen against scratches and stains. Avoid blue light blocking apps — they may subdue some blue light frequencies to reduce eyestrain, but don’t eliminate the harmful light rays. I’ve put together some guidelines for parents when it comes to screen time and the health and wellness of their kids. 1. Set limits on the amount of time your children spend on digital devices. For younger children, this can be as simple as setting a kitchen timer, and for older kids, it could require cutting off the WiFi after a certain time, even if that requires setting password restrictions. 2. Encourage tots to explore their world physically using all their senses. Young children need to learn to interact with their world physically and socially as they develop their visual, auditory and hand-eye coordination. Screen time is a sedentary, stationary and isolated activity that neglects some important aspects of their physical and mental growth. Nothing beats a walk in the park or trip to the playground with a friend to get your kids engaged and interacting with their world. Resist the temptation to use the iPad as a pacifier. 3. Limit your own digital device use around your children. Children will mimic your behavior and start demanding screen time when they see you tapping away, but more importantly, you can’t give your child 100 percent of your attention while you are texting or surfing. Use your “together time” to engage in conversation, start silly games and stories, or draw pictures together. 5. Look into lenses designed for use in the digital age. If your child already wears glasses, ask about “digital lenses.” These lenses are designed somewhat like bifocals. They offer a small amount of magnifying power to alleviate the eye strain induced when locked into a close focus for extended periods of time. Children who don’t wear glasses full time and adults can also benefit from this new lens technology. 6. Look for signs of eye fatigue in your child and have their eyes examined. Watch for squinting, rubbing of the eyes, covering one eye, excessive blinking and watering eyes as possible signs that your child has a vision problem. School screenings are not a substitute for a complete eye examination — typically, they only test long-distance vision, overlooking possible eye coordination and near-focus issues. Be sure your child has had an eye examination by the time they enter kindergarten and take them in sooner if you suspect a problem – even infants can be evaluated for vision problems. If you are concerned about the effects of digital device use on your child’s eyes, ask if the doctor routinely prescribes “computer glasses,” or offers the new lenses designed for computer users when scheduling your appointments. NICHOLAS PAPAGEORGIOU A s adults, we know the importance of great dental care. Proper brushing and flossing prevents tooth decay, plaque and tartar buildup, gum disease and tooth loss. Getting children on board can be another story. It will likely take some gentle persuasion on your part to get your child on the right track with oral care. Teach your children good dental habits and be sure to supervise your child to make sure they are properly caring for their teeth and gums on a consistent basis. After all, you don’t want the first impression your child has with the dentist’s office to be negative as a result of neglected oral health. Starting good oral habits early on in your child’s life will help instill trust and a positive association with your dentist. Here are some tips for instilling great dental habits in your kids: Dental care should begin at the first sign of your baby’s teeth. While this ranges by child, it typically begins at around 4 months of age. Once the baby teeth begin to appear, you can use a washcloth to gently clean the teeth and then move to a small toothbrush designed for babies. At age 1, schedule an appointment with a local pediatric dentist. While it’s important to have a professional check out your child’s teeth, it serves an even greater purpose – getting your child comfortable with the dentist. By the age of 2, children should practice brushing their teeth with a children’s brush and a small amount of toothpaste (a pea-sized portion). Supervise your child to make sure they are thoroughly brushing their teeth. Make sure your child spits out rather than swallows the toothpaste. For children ages 2 and under, do not use fluoridated toothpaste unless recommended by your family dentist. Make it fun! There are so many great, kid-friendly options for toothbrushes and toothpaste these days. Allowing your child to select their dental accessories ensures they’ll be excited about their brushing routine. Be a great role model. Kids want to be just like us. Invite your child to watch you as you get ready for work or for sleep, including your brushing and flossing. Or make your morning and evening brushing routines a family affair by brushing your teeth together. Don’t let infections and painful tooth problems as a result of neglected at-home dental care be your child’s first encounter with the dentist . Teach your child to take a proactive approach to their own health by brushing and flossing regularly and avoiding consuming sugary foods and beverages that lead to cavities. Remember, the health of your child’s teeth and gums has a direct impact on their overall health. Dr. Papageorgiou is part of an Ashburn, VA tradition of dental comfort and care. TEXT SANDRA OSBORN-PETERS T he MCM Kids Run, hosted annually by the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) on the final Saturday of October, has become the premier fall event for motivated school groups and active families. The fall running event welcomes 3,600 kids to the Pentagon North parking lot. The one- mile, have-as-much-fun-as-you-can event is focused on a mission of promoting physical fitness and inspiring healthy lifestyle choices for families. “Participating in the next MCM Kids Run is something participants look forward to as soon as they cross the finish line,” explains MCM Director Rick Nealis. “The event has become synonymous with back- to-school and the beginning of fall family- fitness activities.” For many young runners, covering the one-mile distance requires only minutes. For others, the journey takes a bit more time. “Just showing up is a meaningful step toward a healthier life for some children,” added Nealis. “The Marines are present in full force to encourage every child to keep moving forward.” To maximize family time and enhance the MCM Kids Run experience, a family- fitness festival, called Camp Miles, entertains and educates participants throughout the day. The popular activity area is named for the MCM bulldog mascot, Miles, and features a free, all-day activity area with interactive challenges, crafts, exhibits and games focusing on health and fitness. “Guests of all ages, whether participating in the MCM Kids Run or cheering, will discover something new and energizing while attending this event,” said Nealis. “This is a place for families, parents, teachers and coaches to support and encourage children to be active.” Teachers are an important mentor in many student lives. They provide motivation throughout the year and MCM partner Sodexo recognizes this commitment by providing five Healthy School Awards annually. Each Healthy School Award includes a monetary donation presented by Sodexo to the top five school groups represented by student participation in the event. U.S. Marines, along with mascots Miles and Molly, and representatives from the National Watermelon Promotion Board (NWPB), engage students during a school-wide “Jump with Jill” assembly. “Jump with Jill offers a unique way to reach students in the schools and get them up and moving,” says Stephanie Barlow, director of PR and Social Media, NWPB. “The Watermelon Board encourages kids to try one new fruit or vegetable each week, and this fits perfectly with the theme of the show, as well as the mission of the MCM Kids Run.” Limited space is still available for group registration, as well as individual participation in the MCM Kids Run on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015. Register now at www.marinemarathon.com. Sandra Osborn-Peters is the MCM communications coordinator. Parents can register their kids individually for the MCM Kids Run at www. marinemarathon.com, and schools can register groups of students by contacting Sandra at sandra. osbornpeters@usmc.mil. If you’re looking to get into the spirit of All Hallows’ Eve, then check out these six fun and frightening apps for iPhone and Android devices and tablets. SKIT! by Storytime Studios SKIT! lets members express their imagination by creating animated videos using photos, GIFs, voice and sound effects, and that includes creepy Halloween shorts. It’s all done in a fun, simple and intuitive way using SKIT’s powerful editing tools, accessed with the swipe of a fingertip. Whether you conjure up Freddie Krueger battling Jason Voorhees, choreograph zombies dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” or reveal your own encounter with paranormal activity, you direct the action … including the terrifying ending. After choosing backgrounds, characters, mood and special effects, the user narrates and creates an animated skit, and then spooks friends and family by sharing on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and through text messaging, as well with the whole SKIT! community. So go ahead and channel your inner Vincent Price … if you dare. Carve It! (Halloween) Free by Redrom Interactive Who doesn’t love carving iconic Halloween gourds, the jack- o’-lantern? But then again, who enjoys jamming their arm elbow-deep into a pumpkin and scooping out those sticky, gooey guts? Well, with the Carve It! app, you can carve your pumpkin without the mess, and with the added benefit that these masterpieces won’t ever rot or end up out in the street in a thousand pieces. Of course, if you still love carving your pumpkins each year, Carve It! makes a great tool for working out the details of your designs before slicing into that bright orange flesh. You’ve only got one shot with a real pumpkin, but with Carve It! you can carve endlessly, and save all your creations to the gallery to enjoy for years to come. (Available for Android only.) The Walking Dead: Dead Yourself by AMC One of the most popular shows on television is “The Walking Dead” and without a doubt, the Walker zombies are the marquee attraction. Now you can transform yourself into a walker zombie with The Walking Dead: Dead Yourself app. It’s a photo booth style app that is simple to use and fun to watch the zombie transformation. Grab one of your portrait photos, set the customizable options, then watch in amazement as you are transformed into a photo-realistic zombie abomination. The app uses spine-chilling zombie eyes, mouths and props from the show to make share-worthy photos that will spook all your Instagram friends. Free True Ghost Stories by Joe Kwon Who doesn’t love telling (and listening) to creepy ghost stories by a campfire? True Ghost Stories is a massive collection of scary stories as told by regular people. The ghost stories in this app are user submitted, and you can submit your own. Thousands of creepy narratives are submitted from all over the world, as users recount their strangest and most harrowing tales. Do you have what it takes to spook the masses and crack the Top 10? Free Halloween Sounds Pro by Dream Injector Halloween just wouldn’t be Halloween unless you scare the bejezus out of someone. With Halloween Sounds Pro you can play cruel (but harmless) pranks on friends and enemies alike. With the Timer Trickeration option, you pick a creepy sound, set the timer, hide your device and walk away. When the timer hits zero, watch as the screams ensue on unsuspecting fools. And with Bluetooth Bufoonery mode, you control a second device remotely, so you can hide one device and click away on the other from a safe distance. (Available for iPhone only.) Plants vs. Zombies 2 By PopCap Ready for some mindless zombie fun? In this epic botanical sequel, the zombies, led by Dr. Zomboss, have returned, this time with the hope of creating an alternate timeline where zombies are the dominant species. Gamers battle legions of zombies by amassing an army of powerful plants. Supercharge them with plant food and power up your defenses with amazing ways to protect your brain. The future holds many mysteries including zombies … lots and lots of zombies. The player time-travels first to ancient Egypt and can use keys either purchased or won in-game to unlock pirate seas, wild west, far future and the dark ages.
