I grew up watching my mom and dad show every day how much they loved You know what I mean—those “holidays” scattered throughout the year that seem designed only to make money for greeting card companies, fl orists and restaurants. (Free advice to fellow members of the male species: If you share my opinion, don’t let your wife know—especially just before Valentine’s Day!) I love the “big” holidays that happen from November to January. They are opportunities for family gatherings, traditions and a much-needed break from day-to-day stresses. each other. My dad passed away more than 20 years ago, but I will never forget him bringing my mom a cup of tea in bed every morning, not just on special occasions. And I learned to respect and appreciate all they did for my brother and me every day of the year. All that said, in today’s hectic times, it’s appropriate to pause and remember the special people and special relationships in our lives. Here at Washington FAMILY, we do that more globally, by honoring our “Moms of the Year,” in the pages that follow. Perhaps my cynicism is inherited: My parents grew up in wartime England, when food and gasoline were rationed, and many evenings were spent huddled in underground bomb shelters. They moved to this country when I was a toddler and struggled to understand some of our customs and holidays. My dad was particularly perplexed by Halloween. He was never going to let his son go door to door “begging for candy.” Luckily (for me), my mother’s insistence on adapting to the culture of their new country prevailed. She’s devoted to her family and her community, and she’s constantly hard at work bettering both. Occupation: Small-business owner (On the Purple Couch, LLC) What’s the best parenting advice you’ve ever received? Like everyone, I got a lot of advice once I had Edward. One piece of advice that stays in my mind is that you should always trust your intuition as a mother. I think this is so very true and something to keep focused on. I talk to my son a lot and am always asking him questions about a number of topics, all at his level. I want to always be able to engage with him and let him know that I am here to talk with him. Through our conversations I get to understand a little about what is going on in his world and how it may affect him. How has motherhood changed your outlook on life? Becoming a mother has changed how I see myself and the notion of what it takes to be a mother. For one thing, I respect my mother so much more now that I have a child and a family. The role and importance of a mother towards her children and family is almost inconceivable. Growing up, my mother was a senior official at the United Nations and had to raise two daughters while traveling around the world, and 12  May 2017  washingtonFAMILY.com Becoming a mother has truly humbled me and given me a larger perspective of what it means to be a mother and the responsibilities we have. moving to different countries and school systems internationally. So many books, social media pages, friends and well-meaning family members will give you an onslaught of parenting advice. In a quiet moment, see what direction feels right to you. Research that, and leave the rest behind. Even if this is a first baby, and you are “new” to the parenting gig, you will do an incredible job and be your baby’s biggest ally in life. And on a serious note, take at least five minutes to read up on postpartum depression mental health issues and awareness, and ask your partner to do so as well. If you never experience postpartum, that is fantastic. But on the off chance that it creeps into your life after you have your baby, it’s good to be aware. Who is your role model? She loves being involved in her grandchildren’s lives and understands that both the role of mother and grandmother involves many hats. Occupation Semi-retired; Currently being a “granny nanny” to four of my beautiful grandchildren What advice would you give to new or expectant moms? There are two things you give your children: One is roots, the other is wings. Instill a love of God and for all mankind in their hearts and respect in their actions. Teach children to work hard and take pride in their work. Be a good citizen. Don’t be afraid to put away the electronics, disconnect, hug and have fun. How has motherhood changed your outlook on life? At a young age, I decided that I wanted to be a mother. I viewed my purpose as a mother higher than any other position I could attain through education. I suppose I was pretty naïve at that time, but after a year of college I became a mother and started my career of raising children. As I raised five children, I realized that teaching them, reading with them, doing homework 24  May 2017  washingtonFAMILY.com with them and supporting them in their academics and activities, was educating me in as many ways that working in an occupation would have. As a mother you become a counselor, a teacher, a mentor, a chef, a coach, a chauffer and driving instructor, a doctor’s assistant, a dental assistant, a librarian, an author, a mediator, a judge, an accountant, a stylist and fashion consultant, and other talents that moms use daily in raising a family. I never dreamed how much fulfillment I would receive in life through my children and the life lessons learned. For good or bad, difficult or pleasant, my outlook on life has been enhanced through motherhood. How do you think your child(ren) would describe you? I think my children would describe me as dedicated to family, fiercely loyal, loving unconditionally, hardworking, true to my faith, charitable, selfless, intuitive, head strong and opinionated. They would say that I taught them the importance of leaving people/things/ places/situations better than how they were found. I also hope that they would say through life’s experiences, I’ve learned how to love deeper, accept changes and try to keep my opinions more to myself! What goals do you have for yourself? One of my goals was to be able to “grow-up” with my grandchildren. By that I mean that I wanted to have my children while I was young so that I would still be relatively “young” enough to be able to physically keep up with my grandchildren and enjoy being active with them. I wanted to be able to wrestle, ride bikes, hike, run, swim, jump on trampolines, jump rope, ride our horses, play tennis or any other activities they want to do. Vicki Sweet Mom to Peyton, age 8 and Olivia, age 6 Woodbridge VA Military mothers are their own special breed—they’re committed, fierce, loyal and understanding. Vicki fits that mold. As a military mom, she’s present in the lives of her daughters and has learned how to appreciate the moments in everyday life. Occupation: Executive assistant for Brightline Interactive, and small-business owner of Vicki Sweet’s Vinyl. What’s the best parenting advice you’ve ever received? It sounds totally cliché, but just to remember to stop and enjoy your children for the amazing tiny humans they are. Take time when they are small to get to know them as individuals, so you can help nurture them and encourage them to grow into an adult, true to their inner self. What advice would you give to new or expectant moms? I would tell new moms to humble themselves and lower any expectations they have put on themselves and on others, for that matter. Mom-ing is HARD and in today’s society there is so much pressure to be a certain way or do a certain thing. Do what you feel is in the best interest of your family and try to eliminate people from your life that bring negativity. And ask for help. Don’t be too proud or stubborn to go through this parenting journey alone. How has motherhood changed your outlook on life? Motherhood has definitely put much of my life in perspective. It has helped me to focus on what truly matters and has also forced me to slow down and appreciate the precious moments of everyday life. What goals do you have for yourself? If you had asked me this ten years ago, I would have listed out a well- articulated five-, 10- and 20-year plan. At this point in life, a mother is not often asked this question—typically, the focus is solely on our children! And having children has certainly changed my perspective and my priorities in life. When I paused to think about how to answer this, the first thing that came to mind is how I hope to be able to glorify God in all that I do on this Earth. I know that seems broad, but I believe we were put here for a purpose. By living a worthy, intentional life and building His kingdom through the relationships and interactions we have with others, I expect the rest of my ambitions and goals to fall into place if they are meant to be. What would you say your secret is to balancing life/family/work/ motherhood? I had to laugh a little when I read this question. I wish I could say that I had a secret to making it all work flawlessly, but let’s be real—does anyone really? It’s all about prioritizing and knowing what will matter at the end of the day and what won’t. There are some days that life doesn’t cooperate and it’s okay to just accept that and move on, ready to face tomorrow! washingtonFAMILY.com  May 2017  25 Kim Williams Mom to Chris, age 34, Nick, age 32, Jennifer, age 30, Alex, age 29, Sam, age 24, Abigail, age 22 and Noah, age 18 Manassas, VA Kim is described as a “super hero” by her friends and family. She’s a single-mother to seven, grandmother and is deeply involved in her community. Kim is an avid volunteer and advocate, and involved in many non-profit organizations. Occupation Personal Care Attendant, Full-time babysitting grandma, Advocate for children and families What advice would you give to new or expectant moms? Read, learn and listen to everything, take away what fits, and just do you. Every parent feels they’ve fallen short, but that just proves it matters to you. Hug a lot—I felt as though I missed too many opportunities. Always wear comfortable shoes. You never know when you’re going to have to run. Parenting is not for sissies. Whine if you need to, then stand up and move on because you are the bottom line now. Kids learn more from watching you than they do from listening to you, good or bad. How has motherhood changed your outlook on life? I’ve stopped taking pictures and learned to live the moments. I’ve learned that I can be an imperfect parent and they can be imperfect children/adults and it only makes us 26  May 2017  washingtonFAMILY.com I’ve learned that I can be an imperfect parent and they can be imperfect children/adults and it only makes us love each other more. love each other more. I’ve learned the value of “I’m sorry” in both directions. I’ve realized that success is a really individual experience and no one type is more right than another. I have the additional perspective of having a son with disabilities and that’s taught me a lot. I’m so flexible, I’m fluid. How do you think your child(ren) would describe you? I’d be described as strict, but well- intentioned. They would say I expect a lot of those around me, and they would be right. They’d also say that I believe family matters to me and that I care about people, but that I could use more patience. They would all agree that I have a good sense of humor— that’s mandatory in motherhood. Secret to balancing: During the worst of it I learned to live on less sleep. (Sleep is for the weak. It’s highly overrated.) I also learned to prioritize how I expend myself. I also learned to minimize. For example, kids don’t know the difference between food that took 20 minutes to cook and food that took all day. Most importantly, live with gratitude. It makes the lack of sleep and hours of exhaustive effort way easier to manage. washingtonFAMILY.com  May 2017  27 GUIDES & RESOURCES Baby & Child Care A Child's Place www.achildsplaceinc.com 703-698-8050 3100 Prosperity Ave. , Fairfax, VA A Child’s Place in Fairfax was established in 1981.
