| FAMILY blog W e know all moms work hard to provide My best childhood memories are the simple things my for their families and make the future a mom did for us and with us. Like the smell of homemade brighter place for their children. They chocolate pudding as we walked through the door after give endless hugs and kisses, manage school, stopping for ice cream on the way home on the family calendar, drive countless carpools, chaperone warm days, spending time with just my sisters and mom field trips and cheer from the sidelines at their kids’ biking down the C&O Canal and paddle boating at Lake many sporting events. They are a shoulder to cry on Needwood. As a mother, I try to replicate the simple things and our biggest cheerleader. To show our gratitude and that brought me so much joy and obviously left a lasting recognition, Washington FAMILY Magazine has dedicated memory. our May issue to honoring some amazing local mothers. My own mother set such a high standard of motherhood. I work every day to create the same secure and special environment she did. Her never-ending support and energy still make me realize she’s the one person I want to call for My mom has taught me the enormity of being a mother — a job of endless hours without a paycheck, sick days or holiday leave. Although I may complain, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I could never bear the thought of someone else wiping away their tears or being there to hear about advice. their school day. My mom will always be my role model when navigating this I cherish overhearing their imagination explode as they play crazy game of motherhood. Her ever-echoing voice in my head reminds me my three little boys are my greatest gift. When I call my mom to share a story, she always reminds in the basement, and love watching them create a fort made out of pillows, stuffed animals and blankets. Everyone has warned me these precious days will go by too quickly; as the me to see the good in everyone and everything. saying goes, the days are LONG, but the years are SHORT. She also taught me the meaning of hard work. I watched I wish all of you moms a very happy Mother’s Day. We her stain furniture, make us dresses for special occasions, paint our bedrooms and hang wallpaper. As a perfectionist, know you don’t hear it nearly enough, but a huge “thank you” for all you do, on Mother’s Day and every day! I saw her struggle to allow us to make our projects our own. It took all of her strength not to comment that we added too much glue or the lines weren’t straight. She cringed a little watching us do our own laundry and make our own beds. She lived in fear that we would overload the washing machine and flood the house! But, in the end, she taught us to not bother doing things if we weren’t going to do them the right way. I, too, struggle to find the balance of teaching my own children to do things independently when I can do them faster and neater. But I remember how my mom made me a stronger, more capable person by letting me learn on my own. | hen you think of a mother what comes to mind? The person you call when you have good news? The person who holds you while you cry? The person who worked hard and handled the housework and the bills while somehow simultaneously keeping up with everyone’s schedules? No matter what your memory conjures when you think of the word “mom,” there’s no denying they work hard and make incredible sacrifices every day. They care for us when we’re sick, 10 May 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com pack hundreds of school lunches, help us with our homework and make sure we have everything we need. | Danielle Larkins Mom to Justin, age 5 and Nicolas, age 4 Vienna, VA Nominated by Tim Larkins Danielle is the definition of giving and the embodiment of selflessness. In addition to raising two active, respectful preschoolers and keeping a tidy ship, Danielle is helping out other moms in the community. Even though she’s overworked and exhausted from managing her children, home and successful blog, www.typedblog.com, I see her cooking a second meal for another family, babysitting a friend’s kids or gathering blankets to literally clothe the homeless in D.C. What’s the best parenting advice you’ve ever received? My mom once told me, “Never be lazy as a parent.” That’s always been a good mantra for me because it reminds me that my efforts and actions will pay off, even if I’m doubtful (and exhausted) at that moment. by playing peek-a-boo. Not only was it cute, but it also showed me that tender side I don’t always get to see at home. My second favorite moment was hearing Nicolas say he wants to be just like me. I remember thinking, “Is this a parenting win?” What advice would you give to new or expectant mothers? Oh man, there’s lots I’d love to say. My first piece of advice is the importance of one-on-one time with each child. I try to do this every day with my kids, even if it’s just 10-15 minutes. It’s great “bonding” time and shows them I care, and my kids behave better for the rest of the day. My second advice is to carve out time for yourself, regularly. I spent WAY too much time putting myself last, and I burned myself out. I eventually realized I didn’t need to lose myself and my hobbies just because I’m now caring for others. How has motherhood changed your outlook on life? Motherhood’s provided me with purpose. It’s given me lots to look forward to and helped me appreciate the little things. It’s almost as if I’m seeing life through the lens of a child again; lots of novelty, excitement and exploration. Describe a favorite mom moment. The other day, I saw Justin try to cheer up a boy he just met at the park, who was crying. He got down on the ground and tried to make him laugh What goals do you have for your children? My goal is for them to find their passion, pursue it and be the best at it. I also want them to contribute to the community, or even the world, in a positive way. What are some of your greatest accomplishments? As a mother, it’s raising empathetic and respectful kids. Professionally, it’s having my writing published in the Washington Post’s “On Parenting” and being asked to appear on Fox 5 D.C. several times. washingtonFAMILY.com May 2016 11 |
Mom to Scott, age 21, Kelsie, age 20 and Gwyneth, age 17 Potomac Falls, VA Maureen McCrae Nominated by Sharon Knipmeyer When The Loudoun School for the Gifted needed a full-time mother figure on payroll, we thought of Maureen first and begged her to join. We knew we needed her vibrant personality, her love of caring for teens and her willingness to pitch in regardless of the task. No one was surprised when she agreed to join us, even though she has three children of her own, and owns a competitive gymnastics studio, G-Force Gymnastics. Maureen McCrae is the kind of mom who genuinely loves to be around kids. What’s the best parenting advice you’ve ever received? Model the behavior you expect to see in children. They are always watching you. What advice would you give to new or expectant mothers? You ARE going to make some mistakes as a parent; don’t be too hard on yourself. Understand that each child is unique. You have to figure out what approach works for each child personally. When you are reading parenting advice books, remember that not all approaches work for every child. As a young parent this can be frustrating. Take a deep breath, step back and try a different approach, and eventually you will figure out what works. I would also advise not to worry too much about what other moms think about your parenting style. You have to do what works for your family. How has motherhood changed your outlook on life? I have learned to delight in differences and find humor in most situations. 12 May 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com Who is your role model? How do you think your children would describe you? Crazy (all kids think their parents are crazy)…but lovable. Describe a favorite mom moment. I have spent a lot of time laughing with my kids. I love having my kids and my students hanging out and talking about day-to-day stuff. It is important to talk to the kids and not talk at them; there is a difference. When you respect and trust a kid, they will in turn respect you and want to keep your trust. My late mother Margaret Gall; she was very resourceful. She raised six kids on her own with very little money, and she had a great sense of humor — she had to. And my late mother-in-law Sue McCrae, who was one of the most gracious and selfless women I have ever known. She taught me that I would only regret the things that I didn’t take the opportunity to do. What goals do you have for yourself? I feel I have found my purpose in life by helping and mentoring kids. I plan to continue to make a difference in each child’s life to help them truly believe in themselves. What are some of your greatest accomplishments? Hearing the words from one of my more difficult students, “Thank you for not giving up on me!”

Denise Stern Mom to Jonny, age 8, Zoe, age 6 and Eme, age 6 Bristow, VA Nominated by Ashley Morow Denise is the president of Let Mommy Sleep and Mission Sleep. Let Mommy Sleep is a team of registered nurses and caregivers who give parents of newborns overnight relief and evidence-based education. Mission Sleep is a 501c3 that provides the same service to military families and first responders for no charge. Denise has been an advocate for new parents by attending the White House Summit for Working Families, contributing to the Washington Post and working with several non profits. She has also provided free community classes on newborn care since 2011. As a mother of three school-aged children, she also volunteers weekly in her local school community. What’s the best parenting advice you’ve ever received? “work-itive,” which is their word for hardworking. I was lucky enough to chat with Heidi Murkoff, author of What to Expect When You’re Expecting, who told me that with all the parenting choices we make, “There are a lot of right answers.” It’s so simple, but so often forgotten. Who is your role model? What advice would you give to new or expectant mothers? To treat yourself with kindness and to realize there are a million “baby experts” out there, but you are the expert when it comes to your baby. Even if you feel like you don’t know anything, your instincts are always right. How has motherhood changed your outlook on life? Two things: To me being a parent means experiencing the heights and depths of emotion; ecstatic happiness, crushing sleep deprivation, guilt like no other and the most joyous giggles you’ve ever had. Motherhood has given me these gifts and the result is I’m a much more even-tempered human. Motherhood has made me so much more open minded and compassionate to others. All the judgments you might make, and things you believe are definitely right and definitely wrong become a little more blurred when you’re a parent. How do you think your children would describe you? My own mom. There are so many times I’ll be playing, baking or doing some kind of activity with the kids and I think in my head, ‘How do I know how to do this? Where did I get this idea?’ and then I realize it’s because I am just doing what my own mom showed me. What goals do you have for yourself? I would like to stay healthy and to continue franchising my company Let Mommy Sleep beyond the mid-Atlantic. I think silly, likes to have fun and washingtonFAMILY.com May 2016 15
Mom to Jake, age 8 and Gabriella Leesburg, VA Ellyn Miller Nominated by Christina Croll Ellyn Miller demonstrates that a mother’s love never dies...even after a child leaves this earth. A little over two years ago, Ellyn lost her 10-year-old daughter Gabriella to brain cancer. Ellyn works tirelessly with the support of her husband, Mark, and their son, Jake, to honor Gabriella’s memory through the Smashing Walnuts Foundation, a charity started by the family to raise money for childhood brain cancer research. Ellyn is a fiercely determined advocate for all children, lobbying on Capitol Hill, hosting fundraising events and speaking to community groups about the prevalence of childhood cancer. Before she died, Gabriella vowed her friends and family would “carry on the war” against childhood cancer. Ellyn is more dedicated than ever to doing just that. likely picked it up from me. My children inspire me to become a better person. What is the best parenting advice you’ve ever received? My mom would tell me that I didn’t walk, get any teeth and was bald until I was over 1-year-old. We live in a competitive society. We, as parents, read about the milestones our children are supposed to accomplish and feel as though our own child needs to meet or exceed these timeframes ─ especially when we see other children doing so. Relax and remember that our children will meet these milestones in their own time. You won’t be carrying your child down the graduation aisle wearing diapers...they will learn to walk and be potty trained! What advice would you give to new or expectant mothers? Record (in writing) the funny things that your children say. Technology allows us to pull out our phone and jot down the funny things they say and do. 16 May 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com What goals do you have for yourself? As your kids get older, they will love to hear the things they said and thought. And, you will love the memories these quotes will evoke. Describe a favorite mom moment. The quiet moments when there are no interruptions and we can snuggle together and share the day with one another. Who is your role model? My children are my role models. They challenge my thoughts of right and wrong. If they have a “bad” habit, I look no further than myself, as they most Two weeks after our Gabriella died, we were asked permission to use her name for a House Bill, now known as the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act (GMKFRA), that would give $126 million to the Common Fund for childhood disease research at NIH. Professionally, my goals are to continue to grow Smashing Walnuts Foundation nationally and internationally. And, to insure the GMKFRA is appropriated for the remaining eight years. What goals do you have for your children? My goal is for my son to grow up as a happy, healthy and kind person. Having a great foundation for being a good person will lead to a positive and productive life.

Mom to Simon, age 3 and Gregory, age 1 Ashburn, VA Jill DeLorenzo Nominated by Jason DeLorenzo In addition to caring for her children, Jill works part time at Trinity House Cafe and is a Jamberry consultant to help with finances. But what differentiates her as a “Mom of the Year” is the support she gives to other moms. Her role as La Leche League Leader, founding www. positivebreastfeeding.com, working at her son’s cooperative preschool and being instrumental in the passing of Virginia state law allowing women to breastfeed wherever they are legally allowed to be, shows maternal support is at the forefront of her thinking. What’s the best parenting advice you’ve ever received? My mother was with me during the early postpartum period with both of my children. At about two weeks postpartum with my first, I cried for two days straight. I was very overwhelmed at everything involved with being a new mother, including changing diapers, breastfeeding, nighttime parenting and recovery from childbirth. I was so thankful to have her there. In the midst of the chaos, she told me five words that will stick with me forever: “This time is a gift.” I realized in that moment that I would never get back the precious moments with my children when they were small. Hearing these words helped me get through a dark time and have a positive perspective on the chaos. How has motherhood changed your outlook on life? I have become less reactive and more proactive in the direction of my family. I also channel my emotions in different ways. When something went wrong prior to having kids, I would get upset easily but suppress my emotions and avoid the situation. Now that I am a mother, I no longer hesitate to voice my 18 May 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com affection on his own terms – so I know it was genuine. How do you think your children would describe you? concerns and stand up for my family if needed. Describe a favorite mom moment. Nothing will ever top the moments I met my children at their births, yet every day offers a new memory to cherish. I recently had an experience with my youngest son that warmed my heart. After he finished nursing, he told me, “Thank you, Mommy” for the first time. This brought me joy because he showed me manners, appreciation and My children would describe me as a “juggler.” When I first became their mother, I needed time and space to breathe so I scrapped most of my responsibilities and focused on successfully keeping one ball in the air (keeping my child alive) before adding more balls to juggle. When I found it easier to juggle that one ball, I started to add more responsibilities one-by-one. As my children continue to grow and begin school outside the home, I found that I can successfully juggle even more responsibilities like paid work, volunteer endeavors and hobbies. It is a tough balancing act, but I only take on as many responsibilities as I feel I can successfully juggle. And while juggling, I always remember that the most important ball is my family; I would never let that ball drop first.
Kelly Blumenthal Mom to Mason, age 2 and Finn, age 1 Stafford, VA Nominated by Lauren Richards Kelly Blumenthal is hands-down the most amazing and strongest mother I know. She is the mother of a sweet 27-month-old and a 13-month-old, “Finn” who was born with multiple complex health issues including CHD (Congenital Heart Disease - Defect). She has turned her hardship into a wonderfully positive mission to help others, raising thousands of dollars for UVA Children’s Hospital and the Charlottesville Ronald McDonald House, while maintaining a Facebook page, “Prayers for Finn,” documenting not only her journey, but those in similar situations. This page raises funds, awareness and emotional support for babies with CHD and their families. She has made life-changing relationships with other hospital families, spearheaded the donation of thousands of invaluable items for patients, inspired countless strangers with her strength, courage and faith, and introduced the world to a precious boy many pray for every day. always learn something new from other moms and enjoy exchanging battle stories and magic moments with them. It’s an indescribable understanding that we all have among one another that creates a special bond. What’s the best parenting advice you’ve ever received? The best parenting advice I have received is that silence is not always golden. If your children are quiet, it probably means they are up to something! What advice would you give to new or expectant mothers? Cherish every moment, even the tough ones that come along with parenting, because you never know what tomorrow will bring. Rock them a little longer, hug them a little tighter and laugh as much as possible. How has motherhood changed your outlook on life? It took a long time to realize everything really does happen for a reason, but it truly does. We experienced five years of infertility, including failed IVF, but in the end, we have two beautiful babies. Going through these challenges in addition to our youngest needing open heart surgery has definitely given me strength that I never knew I had, faith to get through the toughest of times and a true understanding of the moments in life that really matter. How do you think your children would describe you? I hope my children would describe me as brave, kind and happy. Who is your role model? My role models are other moms. I What goals do you have for yourself? I would like to spread awareness for Congenital Heart Disease and raise money for UVA Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville, VA, as well as their adjoining Ronald McDonald House. What goals do you have for your children? I just want them to be happy and kind to others. If they are happy and kind, then to me, I’ve done my job. Whatever their definition is of that happiness, I will always support them. Education is also very important to me. I would love to see them excel and graduate from a good Virginia college like William and Mary or UVA! washingtonFAMILY.com May 2016 19
Lily Yeh Mom to Peyton, age 5 and Alyssa, age 3 Vienna, VA Nominated by Amy Chou Not only is Lily an amazing mom to two little girls, she is the go-to mom all our friends reach out to for questions or help with parenting. Last year she also started a company called Little Loving Hands, which provides parents with creative craft kits for their children to make and then donate to charities. It’s a great way to teach young children they can make an impact on someone who is less fortunate. What’s the best parenting advice you’ve ever received? To treasure every moment, even the tough moments as they will pass. Time definitely goes by fast and they grow up so quickly. What advice would you give to new or expectant mothers? You will and probably have already got a lot of advice, so my biggest advice is to take it all in, but apply only what works for you. There isn’t a “right way.” We all want to be the best mom we can be, but know that in your child’s eyes, having you love and care for them already makes you top notch. How has motherhood changed your outlook on life? It’s definitely made me re-prioritize what is truly important in life and not stress over the small things. With kids, you never know what will happen and you have to just take everything in stride. I also put extra effort into making sure I set a good example for my children. Who is your role model? My husband, Jeff. He definitely earns the title of being the better half. As a husband and a dad, Jeff is the most patient and understanding person I’ve ever met and our family is so lucky to have him. What goals do you have for yourself? buy. She chose to buy two, saying she wanted one for her sister. When she gave it to her sister, she received a great big hug and kiss on the forehead in return which brought her such joy. How do you think your children would describe you? My girls would describe me as being caring, strict when needed and extremely goofy. I’m lucky they Describe a favorite mom moment. are still young, as I’m sure some One recent moment happened when I told my youngest daughter that she could pick a candy from the store to of my antics will be re-categorized 20 May 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com as “embarrassing” rather than “entertaining” in the near future. I hope to continue to do the best I can to raise my children to be well- rounded, kind and happy individuals. My goal is to further grow and expand Little Loving Hands so more children can be involved in charitable giving and helping others. What goals do you have for your children? My goal is for them to pursue their passions and always keep in mind the impact that they can have on others’ lives. I hope they are as fortunate as me to grow up and have a wonderful family of their own to experience the wonders of being a mom.

Mom to Jayden age 7, Zahra, age 5 and Eli, age 4 Alexandria, VA Sonia MD Akpa Nominated by Charles Akpa Sonia is a humanitarian and mother of three children. She’s always volunteering to help in the community, whether it be to run a race for a cause or to fix lunch for the homeless. She recently helped an organization renovate a playground in a low-income neighborhood in Alexandria,VA. She is also working to start an organization of young adults willing to help in the community. She shares her passion with her kids, and motivated her oldest son to run with the Marines in order to help his school get a grant. She always says, “In order to live at your fullest, you’ve got to pour the love and strength inside of you into your family, your community and your country.” What’s the best parenting advice you’ve ever received? Learn how to be organized so that you will enjoy being a great mother. What advice would you give to new or expectant mothers? You are not perfect; keep doing your best. Don't worry. With good intentions at heart you will still be a great mom! How has motherhood changed your outlook on life? I became less selfish with great senses of discernment and observation. Describe a favorite mom moment. When my children asked, “Mommy, how did I get here?” while we were looking at their baby pictures. I told them their father and I prayed to have children and while I was sleeping God put them in my stomach. Who is your role model? Mother Teresa. 22 May 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com In order to live at your fullest, you’ve got to pour the love and strength inside of you into your family, your community and your country. What goals do you have for yourself? Enjoy life. Be happy. Make my family happy and leave a positive impact on the world. What goals do you have for your children? Encourage and love them to the fullest so they can become great leaders of tomorrow and positively impact the world. We need more volunteers and more leaders to make this world a better place, starting in our families. What are some of your greatest accomplishments? Some of my greatest accomplishments were made on an emotional level. I managed to rebuild my self-esteem. I started to encourage myself more and to be at peace after many mistakes I regretted for years.
Toula Mitrakas Mom to Julien, age 27 and Stephanie, age 24 Ashburn, VA Nominated by Julien Garman Growing up, my mom devoted everything to my sister and me. As a single mom of two daughters, she worked multiple jobs to provide for us. She spent her “spare time” reading to us, helping us with homework and teaching us about unconditional love through her actions. And when we learned she had breast cancer last year, she smiled her way through the pain and exhaustion, making each chemo treatment into something we should celebrate — a picnic lunch to celebrate the first session down, champagne on the last day of radiation and cake for the last day of chemo. She’s our inspiring hero. What’s the best parenting advice you’ve ever received? You can never, ever spoil your child with too much love. What advice would you give to new or expectant mothers? It’s taken from a poem I used to have in my daughter’s nursery. “The cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow, for children grow up, we’ve learned to our sorrow. So quiet down, cobwebs, dust go to sleep. I’m rocking my baby, and babies don’t keep.” How has motherhood changed your outlook on life? Funny, but I thought I had a lot of answers until I became a mother. It’s only then that I realized how much I DIDN’T know! What goals do you have for yourself? of a sudden, I heard this “scolding” from downstairs, so I quietly walked downstairs, not knowing what I would see. There was my daughter, jumping on the couch, saying in my mom voice, “Get down…get down, I said, get down!” How do you think your children would describe you? Describe a favorite mom moment. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. What they don’t tell you is when your kids imitate you, it’s probably NOT flattering! One day I had just dressed my older daughter in her “Easter best” for church and was dressing her younger sister. All Oh, there’s so many ways I could answer that one! I hope they would say they always felt loved and I tried to give them experiences that would make them happy and healthy. Who is your role model? My father. To continue spreading awareness about detecting breast cancer early, to continue making the most of every day and to keep new experiences a priority for me. For example, I really want to take a real estate course online and do something creative like take a cake decorating class. My big goal is to own a small home by the ocean and to help those in need. What goals do you have for your children? To be content in their careers, love their family more than anything and always put God first in their lives. What are some of your greatest accomplishments? Raising two girls in the D.C. area as a single mom, becoming “Teacher of the Year” twice and being a breast cancer survivor. washingtonFAMILY.com May 2016 23
Mom to Sam, age 7, Noah, age 5 and Emily, age 2 Fairfax Station, VA Rebecca Geller Nominated by Bradford Cheney Rebecca attends nearly every one of her children’s activities, concerts, soccer or t-ball games, all while working as managing partner of her own law firm, The Geller Law Group. Rebecca’s firm was founded on the principal that it is possible for a law firm to be both family friendly for its attorneys and provide high-quality legal services. The all-women firm was profiled in the New York Times in May 2015, and Rebecca was recently honored by Enterprising Women Magazine as an “Enterprising Woman of the Year.” In addition, Rebecca organized the coalition last year that successfully lobbied the Virginia State Legislature to change the state’s law allowing women to legally breastfeed in public. What’s the best parenting advice you’ve ever received? As much as anyone can plan or schedule for the future, being a parent is about learning to roll with the punches when your kid is sick, school is closed due to half an inch of snow or they have a potty accident at the most inopportune time. Just when you think you’ve figured out what to expect from a certain stage of your child, they change and you have to adapt to an entirely new chapter. How has motherhood changed your outlook on life? My children have had several health scares that forced me to prioritize differently, and I no longer worry about minor annoyances like I used to. I also have a new-found appreciation for Amazon Prime, pharmacies with a drive-thru window, Netflix and minivans. Most importantly, I find beauty in small, everyday things when I stop and explore the world through the eyes of my children. 24 May 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com how my children’s love of Chuck E. Cheese helped my career! Who are your role models? Describe a favorite mom moment. I was on my way to give a speech to a conference of women business owners and hit major traffic. I arrived just a few minutes before my speech and found a parking spot, but the meter only accepted coins. I searched my purse and car but only found a few pennies – but of course, I found a cup full of Chuck E. Cheese tokens. I tried the tokens and laughed hysterically when the meter accepted them. After the speech, I brought quarters to feed the meter since I had not actually “paid” for my parking time – and laughed at My grandparents fled Nazi Germany to escape the Holocaust and came to the U.S. with absolutely nothing. Their ability to overcome adversity and rise to success inspire me every day as I strive to emulate their perseverance and grit. What goals do you have for yourself? I want to continue growing my firm so we have at least 10 attorneys by 2020. At the same time, I want to continue prioritizing my involvement with my kids and maintain workplace flexibility so we can pave the way for other law firms to adopt forward-thinking employment policies. I’ve also been approached several times to run for elected office, which I plan to do when my children are older.
Charity Furness Mom to Timmy, age 7 and Julie, age 4 Warrenton, VA Nominated by Megan O. Charity is the executive director of the Fauquier FISH food pantry in Warrenton, VA, and founded the Weekend Power Pack (WPP) program in March of 2014. WPP distributes backpacks of food over the weekends to children in Fauquier County Public Schools at risk of hunger when access to school breakfast and lunch is unavailable. Charity volunteers 40-plus hours every week with the program, ensuring 150 children and their families are fed weekly. She coordinates with school counselors, picks up and hauls bulk orders of groceries each week, delivers bags of food and leads a dedicated team of volunteers. She provides a wonderful example of selflessness to her own children, as well as to those who are fortunate enough to volunteer alongside her. watching. We all had a blast and my son still talks about how much fun he had going over the ramp with me. What’s the best parenting advice you’ve ever received? I was told to trust my own instinct by our family pediatrician. It seems like simple advice, but everywhere you turn someone is telling you how to react or respond to your own child. I’ve learned to accept the advice, learn from it and go with what I know is best for my children and our family. How do you think your children would describe you? My 4-year-old daughter thinks my favorite things to do are laundry and cleaning the kitchen. how my actions will change it. Describe a favorite mom moment. What advice would you give to new or expectant mothers? Find a village. Moms groups and playdates are great ways to build a village. How has motherhood changed your outlook on life? Motherhood has made me responsible; not just for my children but for the world they are growing up in. I think a lot more about the future and We were traveling and got caught in a snow storm so we took advantage of a local sledding hill. I didn’t know the other parents so I was standing at the top of the hill alone taking it all in. I noticed most of the parents were doing the same, standing around watching their children have fun. There was one dad having a great time sledding with his kids. I decided I would rather have fun and make memories with my children than stand on the sidelines Who is your role model? I have so many role models but I often look to my grandparents. They have a lifetime of experiences to learn from and have lived amazing lives. They cherish God, family and friendships. What goals do you have for your children? My children are still young so my goals for them are not to be a doctor or a lawyer. My goals for them are to learn from their mistakes, to be a good friend and to understand and communicate their feelings. washingtonFAMILY.com May 2016 25
