| FAMILY blog I t was always a struggle figuring out what to give But what was on the top of their wish lists? After all these my dad for Father’s Day (or any holiday, come to years of trying to figure out what dads really wanted as think of it!). I would ask him for suggestions, and gifts, the answer seemed so simple. Over and over, they he would say he already had everything: A loving said they wanted to just spend time with their families. family, a roof over his head and his health. He said he lived in the best country on earth and had the opportunity to do One dad wished for a family day at the beach. Another anything he wanted. He was well-traveled, well-read and wanted a simple trip to the movies with his kids, complete he enjoyed the finer and the simpler things in life all at the with unlimited popcorn and soda. Another wanted to hang same time. What more could he want? out with his family for the day with no errands to run or to-do list hanging over his head. So I would make him a card. Maybe write a poem. Then, when I was older, I would give him a good bottle of gin. This year, I think the best Father’s Day gift my son and I can give my husband is to clear the calendar, relax and After I married and our son was born, I struggled once enjoy the time together. And maybe I’ll have Sebastian again with the same gift dilemma: What can our son, make him a new #1 DAD sign to top things off! Sebastian, give his dad for Father’s Day? Each year I gave him socks and underwear in Sebastian’s name. But I was I hope you and your family can work in some quality time curious as to what fathers really want as gifts from their together celebrating the dads in your lives as well. If you’re children. So I asked my husband, “What was your favorite looking for some ideas of where to take dad on his special gift from Sebastian?” Without missing a beat he said, “The day, check out our 10 Father’s Day outings on p. 46. sign.” From all of us at Washington FAMILY Magazine, Happy I didn’t know what he was talking about, but he went into Father’s Day! the bedroom and took out this dusty, beat-up, cut-up sign that says, “HAPPY B-Day DAD #1.” I think we were on vacation (his birthday is in August) and had to use some scrap poster board and pack it in the suitcase. This was from years ago, so I was surprised at the neat writing. I have no idea who wrote it (Sebastian probably dictated it), but my husband loves it. I asked other dads I knew to list their favorite gift from their children and what would they like for Father’s Day. Sure enough, just like that sign, they also loved the home- made gifts or keepsakes from their kids. 6 June 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com Sylvia Witaschek Associate Publisher Washington FAMILY Magazine switaschek@thefamilymagazine.com |

| Peter Alexander “Family first. The rest is details.” TEXT DEBBIE WILLIAMS | COLLEEN MCGREW N BC News’ Peter Alexander is one of the hardest- working men in the news business, regularly chasing down presidential candidates and reporting both for “TODAY” and for “Nightly News with Lester Holt.” He has interviewed world leaders like Fidel Castro and George W. Bush, and covered numerous international stories — from Iraq’s historic 2005 election to the death of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan and the tsunami in Indonesia. He has filed reports from Afghanistan, the Galapagos Islands, Gaza, Israel, Laos and Mexico. Recently, he’s been busy traveling the country reporting on the presidential campaign, hitting the trail with several candidates. But watching him walk down the sidewalk of his Arlington neighborhood, singing “Off to See the Wizard” while holding his 2-year-old daughter Ava’s hand, it’s clear he lives by his words, “Family first. The rest is details.” Alexander is one-half of a Washington news power couple, married to WJLA Anchor Alison Starling. Not that Alison was on board from the start. When asked how they met, he admits, “Alison and I met while we were reporters for competing stations in Seattle 15 years ago. She blew me off for most of a decade before I finally wore her down.” When he’s home with Alison and their two young daughters, Ava and 1-year-old Emma, he makes a point to just be present. His advice to other working parents: “Put your phone down. Easier said than done, but being truly present for 20 minutes is better than being distracted for an hour.” He also plans daddy/daughter days spending one-on-one time with his girls, and sometimes it’s the little things they enjoy the most. “Ava’s big on driving around with the windows down saying, ‘More wind, Daddy!’” We asked Alexander about how he stays connected with his family despite campaign travel, long hours and constant deadlines and how fatherhood has changed his perspective on the events he covers. And do Ava and Emma watch mom and dad on TV? “Not really. Sprout is way more entertaining.” washingtonFAMILY.com June 2016 11 |
| Q&A with Peter Alexander When did you decide you wanted to pursue a career in journalism? I remember watching the evening news at dinnertime when I was growing up in the San Francisco Bay area and being mesmerized by the correspondents reporting from all over. I thought, “What an awesome way to see the world!” As a high school freshman, I cold called the local news stations for an English project, and before you know it, my parents were dropping me off at a station once a week to gather scripts for the 10 o’clock news. If you weren’t a reporter, what job do you think you’d have? Play-by-play for the Cubs or [acting as] Hamilton (I wish). Who is your role model? David Bloom. He passed away shortly before I joined NBC News, but to this day, he remains the journalist I have most tried to emulate. Do you have a favorite story you’ve covered over the years? For most memorable, it’s a toss-up between two: Interviewing Fidel Castro during Hurricane Ivan and interviewing Yao Ming on the stadium floor to wrap up NBC’s coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Before the ceremony, I asked him how I’d find him. His answer: “Just look up!” But my favorite? That’s an easy one — sharing my sister’s story. Rebecca has Usher Syndrome, Type III, a rare degenerative disorder causing her to go blind and deaf. To this day, she’s the most impressive person I know – a psychotherapist, extreme athlete (who recently climbed Kilimanjaro) and the kindest, funniest sister and aunt (to my girls) I could ever wish for. What’s been more of a challenge: Interviewing candidates on the campaign trail or wrangling your daughters at bedtime? Bedtime is actually the best. Although with our 2-year-old, every night is a negotiation for an extra 15 minutes of story time or lying in mom and dad’s bed. With two high-profile, busy careers, what support system do you have in place to help out? This year’s been tough, especially with a relentless campaign to cover, often taking me away from home. Alison is a rock star. She’s really carrying the load for our family. We also have a terrific nanny, and we’re fortunate to have great parents routinely shuttling in to help. How has fatherhood changed your perspective on the events you cover? I’ve probably covered my last warzone for the foreseeable future. As for perspective, juggling work and fatherhood has given me a much greater appreciation for all working parents. Similarly, my ability to empathize has grown dramatically since I became a dad. I feel the stories I’m telling much more deeply, especially about the sacrifices families make for their children. Especially with the “unique” campaign season that’s unfolding, do you have any humorous on-the-job anecdotes? At the news conference following Trump’s Michigan primary win, I asked him 12 June 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com |

After the election, I hope to play more tennis. I played competitively in California growing up. What do you like most about living in the D.C. area? Least? I have a lot of early mornings in this job. Still, I never get tired of driving into the District at dawn and watching the sun rise behind the monuments. Least? Here, in D.C., you can’t escape the 24-hour news cycle. about an ad highlighting the profanity that sometimes punctuates his rallies and how parents should explain it to their kids. His reply: “Oh, look at you! You’re so politically correct. You’re so beautiful. You’re so perfect. Aren’t you just a perfect young man? Give me a break.” My wife had that quote put on a pillow. Do you have any family traditions? Sometimes it feels as though you’re living and breathing politics or media all day. Every so often, you just want to escape. If you could live anywhere, where would that be? I’ll always be nostalgic for the Bay Area, since it’s where I’m from, but Alison and I feel fortunate to call one of the country’s greatest cities our home. My dad always took us to the Oakland A’s games, and Ava just got Do you have a favorite date-night spot? Or other local restaurants or attractions you like to frequent? her first Washington Nationals wiffle ball and bat. Still, I’m not sure Rasika [for date night]. We also love The Italian Store, Peter Chang’s how nine innings will go with the girls just yet. We’ve already taken and Jumpin’ Joey’s. Ava to Annie and The Wizard of Oz at The National Theatre. I’m hoping that tradition sticks. How would you feel if your daughters decided they wanted Any predictions on who will win the presidential race in November? | SUPER FOOD: SUNFLOWER SEEDS D o you think sunflower seeds are just for ballgame snacking? Think again. These little seeds are nutritional powerhouses that are not only the perfect addition to any meal, but also easy on the wallet. TEXT 1 6 June 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com MARY JANE MOSES |
| NUTRITION Comparing the sunflower kernel to other foods high in these compounds, sunflower seeds contain high levels of vitamin E, betaine, phenolic acid and choline. They are also a good source of arginine, lignans, selenium and magnesium. These substances offer a variety of health benefits. Vitamin E offers protection against cardiovascular disease, has anti-inflammatory effects, lowers the risks of colon cancer and diabetic complications and reduces menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes. One-quarter cup of sunflower seeds provides 90.5 percent of the Daily Value (DV) for vitamin E. Selenium is a trace mineral that helps with DNA repair and synthesis, inhibits the growth of cancer cells and induces cancer cell death. One-quarter cup of sunflower kernels provides 30.6 percent of DV for selenium. Another beneficial compound is magnesium, which is good for healthy bones and energy and regulates nerve and muscle tone. Eating 1/4 cup of sunflower seeds gives you 31.9 percent DV of magnesium. AFFORDABILITY Recently, I compared the price of one pound of raw organic sunflower seeds with the prices of raw organic walnuts and almonds. The sunflower seeds are $3.69, compared to $12.99 for almonds and $11.99 for walnuts. Comparing nutrients, sunflower seeds are considerably higher in vitamin E and selenium, as well as higher in folate, iron and zinc than the almonds and walnuts. Getting the most value for your money is important, so you should consider adding nutritious, economical sunflower seeds to your grocery list. TASTE FACTOR Not only does it make sense to eat more sunflower seeds because they offer outstanding nutrition and are affordable, but they also taste great. You shouldn’t have any complaints when adding them to your family’s diet. In addition to just eating sunflower seeds plain, you can try sprinkling them on salads, toasted or raw. You can also sprout the raw seeds and add them to salads, and they are delicious on cooked or cold breakfast cereals. For a new taste sensation, try sprinkling some on pasta with marinara sauce or pasta primavera. They provide a pleasant nutty and crunchy contrast to softer cooked vegetables and noodles. If you want to reduce cholesterol in your diet, here's a simple recipe for nondairy milk made from sunflower seeds: Blend the following together: ¼ cup raw sunflower seeds, 2 cups water, pinch of Celtic sea salt, ½ teaspoon of maple syrup and 1/8 - ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract. If you have a high-powered blender, that's probably all you'll need for delicious, creamy milk. If you have a less powerful blender, you may need to strain it following blending. It's a delicious drink by itself, as the base of a smoothie or poured over your morning cereal. The next time you are grocery shopping, don't forget to add these tasty superfood seeds to the list. They offer a wealth of nutrients and health benefits for you and your family! Mary Jane Moses, D.C., researches and writes about improving and maintaining health through proper nutrition. | Listen to Me? TEXT LESLIE SHORE When my two brothers and I were in elementary school, our family always ate weekday dinners together. Everyone in the family had a chance to talk about problems, successes and minutia of the day. My parents insisted that if we wanted to be listened to, we had to listen to everyone else, including them. My parents created an environment conducive to sincere communication. They knew that if they wanted their children to listen to them, they needed to listen to us. By the age of six, your child is already copying how you communicate. If you communicate with others respectfully, and listen for understanding and not to advise or prescribe, then your child will copy that behavior. Imagine your child coming home from daycare excited to tell you what they did that day. You, busy sorting mail, prepping supper, texting or talking on the phone, ask them to wait until you are finished without telling them how long that might be. All they see from their perspective is everything you are doing is more important than listening to them. Their self-esteem takes a hit. If this pattern continues, it becomes the communication norm for that child. Here’s the great news. You CAN change the communication norm in your family. It will take time and practice, but it is 34 June 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com possible, and the results become apparent in short order. No matter what type of family system, the norm can shift and a new norm can be created. Understanding What Is Happening The first step parents can take to improve family communication is to rigorously look at their current communication behaviors. 1. Observe your communication behavior around your significant other, your parents and siblings, and your friends. Whether the communication is in person or on the phone, what are you modeling for your children? You may want to enlist a ‘communication helper’ from outside your immediate family and let them know what you are working on. Their observations might bring to light some behaviors you wouldn’t otherwise notice. 2. Observe your behavior when you communicate with your kids. Don’t let your emotions about what you are discovering get in the way; you are fact finding so you know what to work on. |
| 3. Once you have spent a month observing and journaling your communication and listening behavior, discuss what you have discovered with your communication helper. Concentrate on which situations, times of day, subjects and emotions trigger you to stop listening. 4. Create a “Top 10 List” of behaviors you want to change. For each behavior, decide on two strategies you will use when it crops up again. In a family where there are two parents or caregivers, make sure both adults are on board and participating. 5. Most importantly, sit down with your children and have a conversation with them about what you are doing and why you are doing it. Make it age appropriate, ask them for their help and set ground rules for what that might look like. Quick Tips and Things to Think About 1. Often, the exact time a child wants to talk is the MOST inconvenient time for you, but try to have the conversation right then and there. You need to understand that your teen’s readiness to talk in a serious, deep, reflective way depends on circumstance, emotion and mood coming into some inexplicable internal alignment that may not come around again anytime soon. If you make the choice to delay the conversation, let your child know when you will come to Special Travelers The Journey from Learning to Life Meghan Mulvenna , Founder (443) 228-6436 www.special-travelers.org specialtravelers@gmail.com SpecialTravelers Special Travelers them to have the conversation, then stick to your word. 2. When you are having a conversation, do so in a place where you will not be interrupted or distracted. If you have multiple children, set up times to converse with each of them. They won’t mind waiting, because they know they will have your undivided attention when it is their turn. 3. Figure out where you are listening FROM. Are you lecturing or listening? Are you solving the issue, or helping your child solve the issue by using unemotional questions to guide their thinking? 4. When entangled in a conflict with your teen, you might be placed in a position where you may be provoked to not listen. If this happens, take a step backward, call a time out and regain your composure. 5. Most importantly, be consistent with your new behaviors. Your child has had years of communication conditioning, and it will take persistence, consistency and owning up to your mistakes to gain their trust and co-create a new communication norm with them. | JoJo Maman Bebe I was first introduced to JoJo Maman Bébé about a year ago after receiving a gift for my 6-month-old son: The precious fisherman’s yellow rain coat. He’s worn the rain coat for the last year, and I have been so impressed with the high-quality craftsmanship and material. It’s cotton lined for coziness and protects against rain and wind. The coat has maintained a “like new” look and feel despite the best efforts of my little guy. So, when JoJo asked me to test out their latest clothing line, I couldn’t wait to try more of their unique styles. Each of my boys (ages 5, 4 and 1) re- ceived an outfit in their true size and they all fit perfectly. My 18-month- old received the twill, short-baby overalls in navy, which they paired with a striped polo-shirt bodysuit. The overalls have adjustable button straps so they will last all season. 44 June 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com TEXT JULIE TURCO It was easy to change him with the snap legs and side openings, and I received compliments on his outfit all day. (Even Prince George has been seen around London in these cute trousers!) For my 4-year-old, they sent vibrant, red-twill chino shorts paired with the Harvard Airplane tee. When first trying them on, I was afraid they might be too small, but they ended up fitting perfectly because of the elastic waist. A nice aesthetic touch— the elastic waist is only visible in the back, so they still give the impression of a flat front. They were adorable on him! The shirt material was extra thick, so it should wear quite well. Finally, my 5-year-old received twill turn-up pants in khaki, paired with the nautical scene tee. With the op- tion to roll them up, they will be a perfect transitional pant for the spring or fall days which start cool but heat up in the afternoon. And the tee was extra thick, high-quality fabric. My boys—who are usually clad in gym shorts—never complained the clothes were uncomfortable to play in. And the best part: Everything was machine washable and did not fade in the dryer. I found JoJo’s prices to be slightly elevated versus peer brands, but well worth it based on the durability. This European company is definitely poised to do big things on this side of the pond, so check them out if you’re looking for high-quality, stylish clothes for your little ones.
