After 23 years, we’re now retired military. My husband, and father of our three kids, is no longer wearing his uniform and having folks salute and call him “Sir.” While we don’t plan on saluting him at home to compensate, we’re very proud of him — then and now. As we’ve made the switch from military to civilian, I’ve watched my husband consider his future through the lens of fatherhood. A lens that is heavier and more distorted for him than I had previously realized. Every career decision he’s made this year — from retiring to choosing his next job – has been about “us.” Having been married forever and best friends before that, you’d think I would have understood what being a dad has meant to my husband. Or, more to the point, what being a dad has done to him. As a mom, there’s no getting away from what having kids has done to me. My life has a definite fault line between before kids and after. My career changed dramatically, then went away, my body was not my own for years and now bears little resemblance to the pre-2000 version, my brain is littered with all the kid-generated to-dos, and, speaking of litter…what happened to my clean house? My impression of my husband’s life, before and after kids? He had the same job, continuous possession of all body parts, and his room of the house is under national park rules: Feel free to visit; just leave no trace. While I was in that first baby fog, my husband had time to ponder this new reality. As a new dad, he was left with the task of picking up the bits of our previous life and crafting the basis for our new life as a family. What I didn’t realize is how parenthood changed his perspective and priorities almost as much as it did mine. As we’ve raised our kids, I have envied his freedom to pursue his career while it was all I could do to keep the homestead in good, well, stead. As he’s been so successful in his professional pursuits, I didn’t appreciate how much he had to work the system to be sure his career didn’t upset our family apple cart. He turned down opportunities if it meant moving us. He took a series of dreaded correspondence courses in his “spare” time so he wouldn’t have to be gone for nine months. He’s played the parent card he was dealt with an amazing poker face. So this Father’s Day, I’m going to take an extra moment to look at our precious world though my husband’s eyes. I realize now more than ever that his journey has been as much about our kids as mine has. The dad role he’s sculpted is just so very different (and controlled) than my frenetic mom role. So happy Father’s Day to my dear husband and to all those quietly dedicated dads peering through their own fatherhood lens. Military or not, we salute you. This year’s transition made me realize that my impression of my husband’s “gentle” metamorphosis to daddy was not exactly spot on. We were married seven years before we started a family - a long (fabulous) time of just us. So when the atomic bomb of baby number one hit, I got sucked into the experience 100 percent. I used to be “his” – then I was “theirs.” Our world tipped in a big way. 6  June 2015  washingtonFAMILY.com Cynda Zurfluh Special Projects Editor Washington FAMILY Magazine czurfluh@thefamilymagazine.com When your family is complete, consider Essure ® permanent birth control. Essure is the only non-surgical permanent birth control • Over 99% eff ective* • FDA-approved and available in the US for over 10 years • Non-hormonal • May be covered by your health insurance plan at no cost† The Essure® inserts are permanently placed in your fallopian tubes. Unlike getting your tubes tied, the Essure procedure is non-surgical. It can be performed right in your doctor’s offi ce in about 10 minutes. There’s no downtime to recover—most women go home about 45 minutes after the procedure and return to their normal activities within 1 to 2 days. The Essure Confi rmation Test is given 3 months after the procedure to verify the inserts are placed correctly and your fallopian tubes are completely blocked, providing permanent birth control. To learn more about Essure and fi nd a doctor, visit essure.com or call 1.877.ESSURE4 (1.877.377.8734) Indication Essure® is permanent birth control that works with your body to create a natural barrier against pregnancy. Important Safety Information Essure is not right for you if you are uncertain about ending your fertility, can have only one insert placed, are or have been pregnant within the past 6 weeks, have had your tubes tied, have an active or recent pelvic infection, or have a known allergy to contrast dye. Talk to your doctor if you are taking immunosuppressants. WARNING: You must continue to use another form of birth control until you have your Essure Confi rmation Test (3 months after the procedure) and your doctor tells you that you can rely on Essure for birth control. It can take longer than three months for Essure to be eff ective. Talk to your doctor about which method of birth control you should use during this period. Women using an intrauterine device need to switch to another method. If you rely on Essure for birth control before receiving confi rmation from your doctor, you are at risk of getting pregnant. Please see additional Important Safety Information about Essure on next page. *Based on 5-year clinical study data. † Some restrictions may apply. Visit essure.com/aca to learn more or contact your health insurance provider. washingtonFAMILY.com  June 2015  7 ADMINISTRATION CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER Bruce Potter Important Safety Information (continued) WARNING: Be sure you are done having children before you undergo the Essure procedure. Essure is a permanent method of birth control. During the procedure: In clinical trials some women experienced mild to moderate pain (9.3%). Your doctor may be unable to place one or both Essure® inserts correctly. Although uncommon, part of an Essure insert may break off or puncture the fallopian tube requiring surgery to repair the puncture. Your doctor may recommend a local anesthetic. Ask your doctor about the risks associated with this type of anesthesia. Immediately following the procedure: In clinical trials some women experienced mild to moderate pain (12.9%) and/or cramping (29.6%), vaginal bleeding (6.8%), and pelvic or back discomfort for a few days. Some women experienced nausea and/or vomiting (10.8%) or fainting. In rare instances, an Essure insert may be expelled from the body. During the Essure Confirmation Test: You will be exposed to very low levels of radiation, as with most x-rays. In rare instances, women may experience spotting and/or infection. Long-term Risks: There are rare reports of chronic pelvic pain in women who have had Essure. In rare instances, an Essure insert may migrate through the fallopian tubes and may require surgery. No birth control method is 100% effective. Women who have Essure are more likely to have an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the uterus) if they get pregnant. This can be life-threatening. The Essure insert is made of materials that include a nickel-titanium alloy. Patients who are allergic to nickel may have an allergic reaction to the inserts. Symptoms include rash, itching and hives. The safety and effectiveness of Essure has not been established in women under 21 or over 45 years old. Essure inserts do not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases. Talk to your doctor about Essure and whether it is right for you. You are encouraged to report negative side effects or quality complaints of prescription drugs to the FDA. TEXT Debbie williams & CYNDA ZURFLUH A drian Kulp is a Clarksburg, MD, stay-at-home dad with three kids under the age of 5. Just like any stay-at- home parent, his days are filled with grocery shopping, diaper duty, potty training and toddler meltdowns. So what sets him apart from the countless other parents doling out Cheerios at home so their spouses can maintain their careers? 10  June 2015  washingtonFAMILY.com We admit, we weren’t rushing to glorify the stay-at-home DAD. Why the parade when a dad stays home and moms have been doing it in droves, forever, with no fanfare? And as such, why a feature article in a local magazine? Well, it turns out Adrian knows what’s up. He is a self-deprecating, Adrian’s life pre-kids included working with the likes of Chelsea Handler and Adam Sandler. His life with kids is cool, too. He has a successful blog, just produced a reality series on A&E, and wrote a book that’s been optioned for a TV show. He’s figured out how to stay home with his kids and support his wife’s career, all while expressing his creative side and advancing his career. It’s a stay-at-home parent’s greatest wish. Q & A relatable, wildly funny guy. He has an interesting life story and an engaging way to tell it. That, not his gender, is what makes him a great feature article. The skill that has paid the biggest dividend for me is my sense of humor. Being a stay-at-home dad for three kids has shown me many frustrating moments. The ability to take a minute, step back and laugh about something that would normally send me through the roof has saved me (and my sanity) more than once. I guess I have somewhat of a unique situation. My first priority is as a full-time stay-at-home dad, but I’ve also been lucky enough to publish a book with NAL/Penguin, produce “Modern Dads” for A&E, become a regular contributor to The Huffington Post and TODAY.com/parents, and have my blog, “Dad or Alive” optioned for TV by Sony Pictures Television. My personal and professional life have somehow become all twisted up and tangled together like an old phone cord. Have you networked with other local dads for support? In real life, I don’t know too many other stay-at-home dads, however, I am part of a very tight-knit private Facebook group composed of almost 1,000 dads across the U.S. and beyond. Most of the dads are bloggers, authors, writers, etc., and once a year I have the chance to connect with them at a conference called “Dad Summit 2.0,” which provides a platform for networking with other dads, as well as brands. What about local moms? Are you the “beau of the ball” at parenting get-togethers, or is there a sideways glance thing going on from moms? LOL. I guess I find that it’s not THAT difficult to connect with other guys my age, I’m still a huge fan of baseball, football, hiking and fishing, but most of the time, I have a lot more in common with the moms these days. Generally, I think moms love hearing my perspective on parenting, they love occasionally seeing me squirm – you’ll definitely have some naysayers, but parenting is one of the toughest gigs out there. Q & A Yes, we can so relate. I spent almost 13 years working in comedy, as an agent, an executive for Adam Sandler and Chelsea Handler, and was also responsible for booking the comics on “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” for a year or two. Home Dad experiences back to the working world? Adrian started his “Dad or Alive” blog in 2010 as a way to express himself and keep his sanity. Reading through it, you get a taste of this quirky dad’s witty writing and keen sense of humor. And his love for his family. This combination is apparent when asked what he likes most about staying home with his kids: And what he likes least? “I guess I get tired of laundry and dishes. Maybe we should just become nudists and eat off of paper towels.” professional experience into childrearing? What skills do you take with you from your Stay-at- As a backstory, Adrian grew up in Pennsylvania and made his way to Los Angeles after college. He worked in the entertainment industry in comedy, eventually at the executive level (thus the ability to impressively name-drop). He married Jen in 2008, and the following year their daughter was born. When she was 10 weeks old, his contract ended, and he found himself job-hunting. Since his wife’s career was taking off, he became the stay-at-home parent. In 2011, shortly after the birth of their second child, they relocated to the D.C. area to be closer to family on the East Coast. “Aside from my kids, I don’t really have a boss. We’re not on a constant deadline to be somewhere or get something done. Of course, we have a schedule with preschool and T-ball, but it’s flexible most of the time. I love getting to spend this time with my kids – they never cease to amaze and inspire me.” What skills have you been able to parlay from your What made you decide to write a blog? Did you always want to write a book? The blog was born out of pure necessity to not rip my hair out in clumps AND find a creative outlet. I went from an extremely social and active executive position in Hollywood straight into sitting in a quiet living room with my kids, who couldn’t even talk yet. Let’s just say if anyone had seen me walking around the house in my robe, talking to myself like a paranoid schizophrenic, I’d probably have been long committed and writing this from the asylum. washingtonFAMILY.com  June 2015  11 DAD OR ALIVE. the confessions of an unexpected stay-at-home dad. Q & A I needed a way to vent about my transition into being a stay-at-home dad. As far as the book goes, I think I just got really lucky – the right people were reading my posts at the right time, and I’m just extremely grateful that I got that opportunity. Do you ever worry about your kids growing up, reading the blog posts and being upset with what you’ve shared about them? Great question. Only recently, as my daughter is almost 6, have I started to think about privacy, the web and at what point I’m crossing the line with what I share. I’m sure that my kids will go through a stage where they could be embarrassed about some of the things I’ve written about or posted online, but in the end, I hope they appreciate how much of their lives that I’ve documented, the great times we’ve shared and the strong relationship they have with their father. How do you think stay-at-home moms and dads are seen by those who have not braved those trenches? What’s the biggest misconception? I certainly don’t speak for everyone, but I kind of feel like parents who haven’t “braved the trenches” of being a primary caregiver tend to think it’s easy. Big deal, you give them some Goldfish and throw on a movie – BAM – done deal. Totally not true. I don’t get paid enough (kidding) for the diarrhea blowouts, teething, potty-training, biting, screaming, yelling and deli-line tantrums. What has surprised you most about parenthood? I never thought I was capable of having patience. Parenting has broken me. What does your family like to do for fun in the area? We love visiting the local orchards, going to the state parks and taking the Metro down to the museums. We also just picked up a 16-foot fishing boat, and I’m sure that we’ll be exploring some lakes and getting our picnic on. What are your favorite local restaurants/Date- night spots? Wait, was this question meant for me? At the moment, we’re big fans of any restaurant that will tolerate us. It’s usually a Mexican restaurant, Chik-Fil-A or Buffalo Wild Wings because they have game tablets for the kids. My wife and I recently concocted an idea to have a date night once or twice a month – I miss good food. I miss being able to eat without having spaghetti thrown in my hair. If there are any restaurants out there in the D.C. area that want an honest shout out – send me a tweet at @dad_or_alive – you’ll probably get the best review ever. For more than four decades, dietary fats have been demonized and disparaged. We avoid them, purchase low-fat or fat- free options and even choose synthetic or factory-created fats the Skinny on Fats TEXT Jaime Coffey Martinez, MS, RD over real food. Current science is revealing that fat is not what is hurting our health. In reality, fat is necessary for many key functions in the body. For example, it provides energy, maintains core temperature, makes hormones, absorbs nutrients and has a major role in neurological and brain function. The war on fat may be over, but the dietary recommendations of the past decades have left many of us confused about which fats to avoid and which to include. Let’s break it down: Monounsaturated Fats These fats are historically referenced as “healthy” fats and are credited for decreasing cardiovascular and cancer risk in addition to providing nutrients. Examples of monounsaturated fats include olives or olive oil, vegetable oils, nuts and avocados. The Mediterranean Diet, rich in olive oil, is associated with reduced risk of early death and weight management. Debate continues on whether olive oil is oxidized at high temperatures; therefore, some recommend limiting use to low heat and using only extra virgin olive oil. Polyunsaturated Fats Also referred to as “essential” fats, meaning unlike monounsaturated and saturated fats, the body requires polyunsaturated fats through diet for biological processes. Polyunsaturated fat can be found in nuts, seeds, fish, algae, leafy greens, vegetable oils and krill. Omega three, six and nine are all polyunsaturated fats, however, their roles in the human body are vastly different. Focus your diet on the inclusion of omega 3s (found in fish, algae, leafy greens) since they are anti-inflammatory and heart healthy. It is important to note that fats are not exclusively saturated, monounsaturated, or polyunsaturated. Foods are labeled based on their most dominant form, but often contain a combination of all types of fat. 30  June 2015  washingtonFAMILY.com Trans Fats Also known as hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils, these fats are categorically and entirely unhealthy and linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and even cancer. Found in foods such as baked goods, vegetable shortenings, margarine, snack foods, processed foods and fried fast foods, there is universal agreement these fats should be avoided at all cost. Saturated Fats By definition, these fats are “saturated” with hydrogen atoms and are solids at room temperature. Examples include butter, coconut or palm oil, animal fats and full-fat dairy. Saturated fats have been falsely linked to disease and subsequently feared, however, science is now proving otherwise. They are rich in fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K), can increase good cholesterol, have anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties, and provide satiety and flavor to foods. Saturated fats are also heat resistant, meaning fats such as butter and coconut oil are preferred for high-temperature cooking (i.e., grilling, roasting and broiling). The Children’s Science Center (CSC) will open its first location, known as the Children’s Science Center Lab, at Fair Oaks Mall this month. The lab provides fun, interactive exhibits, activities and programs for children and families to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) hands-on. Focused on children aged 2-12, the lab offers four experience zones: The Experiment Bar, Inspiration Hub, Tinker Shop and Discovery Zone. In addition, the Children’s Science Center Lab offers summer camps, birthday parties, field trips and other group visits. Campers in their Adventures in STEM summer camp will get excited about STEM through fun activities, hands-on labs, engineering challenges, digital investigations, and more. There are limited spots still available for camp. Nene Spivy, CSC executive director, is thrilled that after five years of being a mobile, museum without walls with only weekend and evening programs, “We now have a museum facility that makes hands-on learning available any day of the year.” CSC will operate seven days a week at its Fair Oaks Mall site, in addition to continued operation of its mobile community outreach programs. Educational expert Peter Riddle and developmental pediatrician Dr. Richard Reutter have developed a combination of “outside-the-box” educational and medical technologies that work directly on the brain’s processing abilities. Their Empowered Learning Program directly affects underdeveloped cognitive, visual and sensory- motor functions – and it works for both kids and adults. The Empowered Learning Program measures the cognitive, visual processing and sensory-motor integration functions of those experiencing learning and/or behavioral difficulties. Empowered Learning develops individualized programs to remediate deficiencies, often permanently, which enable the student to then easily assimilate the content taught in school. Empowered Learning Centers have helped thousands of kids for the past 24 years. A new center is now open in the Bethesda, MD, area, so our DMV kids have close-to-home access to this great resource.
