This could mean and avoiding grocery shopping, that gym workout or the taking a walk with my family, doing a workout tape in the laundry that’s been piling up all week. Aruba: A Tropical Family Adventure TEXT Britni Petersen W hen I first thought of Aruba, the words “honeymoon,” and “romantic getaway” came to mind. I imagined an island full of relaxed, vacationing couples, sipping on tropical drinks along clear water beaches – enjoying some quality time alone. However, after spending a few days on a press trip to the exquisite Aruba Marriott Resort & Casino with my fellow FAMILY coworker, we quickly learned that Aruba is much more than a quiet, exotic haven for couples. We discovered an adventurous and playful vacation spot ideal for the whole family! FOOD Our first night, we were escorted to one of the hotel’s main restaurants, Simply Fish. The restaurant is located directly on the beach, so you can sit, wiggle your toes in the sand and feel the ocean breeze while savoring your food. And since we all know it’s hard to enjoy a fine meal with a bunch of antsy and energized kiddos, this restaurant location is ideal. Kids can play in the sand while parents relax and take in the view – a win-win! The hotel offers so many dining options, 16 January 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com from casual, light eating at the Hotel’s Resort Café, to buffet, family-style dining at La Vista. If you want privacy, you can order room service and have your meal set up on your patio, so you can still take in the gorgeous beach view while you eat. Just outside the resort, there’s a plethora of Aruban food worth discovering. We ventured to the famous Linda’s Dutch Pancakes to indulge in massive, “pizza- sized” pancakes with a selection of more than 60 savory and sweet toppings. Since Aruba is part of the Dutch territory, this is considered a cultural food staple. We also discovered another cuisine hot spot, The West Deck, located in Aruba’s newest Linear Park. This beach deck restaurant overlooks the water and is a seafood-lover’s dream. You can truly feel the spirit of the island as you feast on tapas-style dishes among the locals while gazing at the breathtaking sunset. While it’s one thing to taste the delicious Aruban cuisine, getting to cook your own island specialty is another experience in itself. The hotel offers cooking lessons with the head chef, so we signed up for a lesson on how to make Keshi Yena, another signature Dutch dish consisting of sliced gouda, chicken, peppers and a spicy tomato-based sauce that eventually gets melted to perfection. This cooking lesson was an ideal activity for kids as well as adults. The kids get a special chef hat and apron, and the chef guides them through the recipe with individualized attention. As with most activities at the resort, events are planned with families in mind, and the hotel truly provides a kid-friendly atmosphere. BEACH LIFE We could have spent every day simply walking outside the hotel doors and onto the gorgeous beach, and that would have been satisfying enough. But, there are so many other family-friendly island outings and activities worth checking out that are only a short ride away. The hotel recommended we check out the iconic Baby Beach, and I am still in awe. Imagine the most crystal blue, pristine, tropical island beach, and that’s Baby Beach. As an added bonus, the water is extremely shallow, calm and clear, so parents don’t have to worry |
about a strong current or unforeseen deep water levels. It’s absolutely perfect for families! donkeys (a major plus for the kids) and they even indulge you in “donkey selfies!” For a fun afternoon activity, we took a Beach Tennis (the official sport of Aruba) lesson with a wonderful professional instructor who taught the coordinated (and not so coordinated!) of us the basics of the sport. It was a fun, entertaining way to get some exercise after a lazy morning on the beach. Other local activities include surfing, sailing, yoga paddle boarding, pool aerobics, wind surfing and more! And you can rent all sorts of rafts and other floating gear – anything beach-related you can think of, they have it. The next stop on our tour was The Natural Pool, a small pool-sized oasis near a stretch of the coastline perfect for snorkeling — full of the most beautiful, tropical and extremely colorful fish. And for the truly adventurous, adrenaline- seeking adults, it’s a perfect spot for cliff diving. The Jeep excursion alone, without the pit stops, is an adventure in itself. When they say “off-roading,” they really mean it. The tour takes you along uninhabited island areas, from extremely bumpy and rocky terrain, to deserted landscapes and crystal shorelines. The experience is truly unforgettable. F or those new to the college-admissions process, the SAT and ACT are the two standardized tests used by most colleges and universities throughout the country (some are test- optional). In March 2016, students will be taking a newly redesigned SAT. 10. Points will no longer be deducted for incorrect answers, and only four answer choices will be offered instead of five, with no experimental section. Here’s some advice for current high school juniors to consider when deciding which test to take, when to take it and the need for future tests: • Take a practice test to determine which one is best suited to you. Many students end up taking both the SAT and ACT. • Consider taking either or both tests at least once during junior year. Then make time during the summer to focus on one test and take it again in the fall. • Find out the super-scoring policy of the schools to which you will apply. Schools will NOT superscore between the old and the new SAT. (Fewer schools superscore the ACT than the SAT.) • If you need to take SAT Subject Test(s) (based on specific college application requirements) schedule these carefully because they are often offered on the same dates as the SAT. • For the SAT, order the Q&A service whenever available to track and review the mistakes you made. With this service, College Board will send your test, your answers and the correct answers about a month later. Pleas Imme e Proof diate 703-318-5509 ly! Here are the top 10 updates for the new SAT: 1. The new SAT reportedly aligns better with the curriculum that students are exposed to in public schools. 2. More reading will be required of students across all sections of the test. 3. Reading selections will be more fact-based, and students will be required to justify some answers. 4. Grammar questions will be presented in a content paragraph format instead of single-sentence questions. 5. The vocabulary test will focus on words that are less esoteric and more commonly used in the “real world.” 6. The essay will be optional, which is a choice now similar to the ACT essay. Although many colleges and universities will require the SAT essay, it will be scored separately from the rest of the test. 7. Math sections will test fewer topics, but will reach a higher level and require a deeper understanding of the content. 8. Calculators will NOT be allowed on one math section (this may be a problem for many students who rely heavily on the calculator). 9. The test is now scored out of 1600 points (800 Math/800 Reading). mom review: A s the mother of a 7-year-old who absolutely loves science, I jumped at the chance to check out the new Children’s Science Center Lab at Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax, VA. Before going, I checked the website to make sure it would also be fun for my 4-year-old daughter and almost 2-year-old son. It’s geared toward the pre-school and elementary crowd (and kids under age 2 are free), so off we went! The CSC Lab is designed for children to create, learn, imagine and experiment with all sorts of hands-on activities to help them SCHOOLS / preschools 24 January 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com TEXT PAMELA PRADO learn STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) principles. The Experiment Bar was our first stop. My kids first chose to create “magnetic slime.” It sounded messy, and I was thrilled to be doing it somewhere besides my home! A staff member set out all the ingredients and tools to make the slime. The instructions were simple and shown on a tablet so my second grader could read them himself. As the goo transformed |
into a solid object, the employee explained how magnetic fields work (in a fun and simple way) and gave my kids a magnet to interact with their slime. The kids were giggling, my son was asking questions and they were having a ball! We did two more experiments at the bar, involving a balloon and bubbles. The Tinker Shop was just as fun. Stations include building a robotic arm, experimenting with a wind tube, making a magnet train and building with LEGOs. Instructions are included at each station, but kids are also encouraged to create something unique. My kids kept gravitating toward the wind tube. How could they not? You can make a creation of cardboard, cups, straws, etc., throw it up the tube and then watch it float around. It was awesome! We stayed for about 2½ hours and my kids wanted to stay longer. We all had a great time. My 7-year-old son thinks it’s the greatest place ever and asked when we can go back. My 4-year-old daughter had just as much fun and happily carried her “surfboard” (made of a piece of cardboard, a paper cup and paper clips) back to the car. TRENDY Make-At-Home Masks For Glowing Skin TEXT Kay Raymer A nyone can prepare make-at- home masks for glowing skin with all natural ingredients right from their own kitchen. A facial mask is an excellent way to renew and energize, while also removing dirt, bacteria, makeup and dead skin cells. Some of the most popular mask ingredients include honey, olive oil, apricots, lemons, milk, yogurt and eggs. Lemon + Egg One of the best-known facials is the simple lemon juice and egg white mixture. It is fine for use on both dry and oily skin. Mix and apply to the skin, avoiding the eyes, and allow it to dry completely. After rinsing with warm water, you’ll understand why people swear by it! Honey + Strawberry People with oily skin can appreciate the Here are some simple homemade recipes for extraction process of this mask. Use a glowing skin: spoonful of honey, six strawberries and two Apricot teaspoons of heavy cream to make the mask mixture. The mask should remain on the face Some homemade recipes are better for dry for at least 30 minutes before rinsing with skin and others for oily. Apricot masks are warm water. better used for dry skin conditions. The easiest way to make the apricot mask is to crush the fruit pulp in a bowl, add one teaspoon of olive oil and mix together. Apply directly to the face and allow time for the mask to dry before rinsing with warm water. To remove any remaining dead skin and to moisturize, mix melted shea butter and water at a spoonful each to apply after the apricot mask. Leave this on for approximately 20 minutes and then rinse with clean, cold water. An apricot facial scrub can be used for oily skin, too. Combine the crushed pulp with Honey Oily skin can also benefit from a mask of honey alone. Begin by washing the skin with warm water to open the pores and make the face more receptive to a bond with the honey. Apply the honey and allow drying time before rinsing with warm water again. After your face dries, wash once more with cold water to close the pores. The best thing of all about these skin care recipes is that they can be used as often as you like without any worry of applying them too often. Homemade recipes with natural ingredients are safe and fun to use, and they promote a healthy complexion! an egg white, the juice of one lemon, a Kay Raymer provides information, tips, resources and recipes teaspoon of yeast and a teaspoon of yogurt. for safe, natural, make-at-home skin care.
