| “Healing Children” MEMOIR BY A LOCAL DOCTOR AT THE FOREFRONT OF CHILDREN’S MEDICINE BY BETH ROESSNER F rom their tiny hands to their budding imaginations, children are not the same as adults. And yet, it wasn’t until the ‘80s and ‘90s when their differences were recognized in the medical world. Pediatric specialists did not exist and many children were treated medically as adults. Even today, children’s hospitals are not in abundance. There are 35 independent children’s hospitals in the United States and 200 that operate as part of a larger integrated health system. In comparison, there are over 5,000 hospitals throughout the country that primarily focus on adult care. Photo Provided Dr. Kurt Newman, CEO and president of Children’s National Health System in Washington, D.C., saw the shortcomings of pediatric care early on in his career. He was fascinated by children’s personalities and resiliency, and wanted to bring a holistic, hands-on approach to pediatrics. Although pediatric medicine was not in his “game plan,” he discovered the 10 February 2018 washingtonFAMILY.com |
| focus exclusively on children. Dr. Newman recently released a new memoir, “Healing Children,” which chronicles his endeavors and lessons learned as a pediatric surgeon. Here’s what he had to say. It relates to the fact that children’s health care is not enough of a national priority. I don’t think we invest enough in our children. One example: There aren’t enough children’s hospitals. I think another example is when you listen to the debate on Capitol Hill and the legislative proposals, you don’t hear people talking about the impact on children. It’s all about adults, elderly and the disabled. Children are not part of the conversation. What was your motivation for writing the book? After 32 years of being in a children’s hospital, most of that as a surgeon, I would get calls and questions from parents all the time about pediatric medicine. What I wanted to do was empower parents with the knowledge of how children are different than adults. The medicine is different. The biology is different. How do children and adults differ physiologically? One of the most obvious ways that children are different is that they start small and grow up. In every step of the way, their brain is developing from the time they are born to the time they are adults. At Children’s Hospital, doctors, nurses and specialists are aware of that development and have to factor that in. Children are more resilient in many ways. Their tissues and their organs are more resilient. You want doctors and hospitals that are bernie_photo/iStock/Getty Images Plus/Getty Images excitement and impact of being a surgeon for children at a children’s hospital. His two-year fellowship at Children’s National has turned into a 30-plus year career in helping children and advancing medicine. Why are there so few children’s hospitals in America? I believe, instead of cutting funding and cutting Medicaid (which is such a big piece of the coverage for children), we invest more. It’s a smart investment and saves money in the long run. You’re eliminating diseases early and may be correcting things that may lead to future complications. Early diagnosis and early intervention is a smart investment. emergency department, for example, doesn’t see that many children or have pediatric specialists available. They may not even have pediatric equipment available. What I try to point out in the book is that it’s a good idea for parents to think about this ahead of time. People should be able to ask and advocate for their child, and think about where they are going to take their child if there is an emergency. And, to also make sure a children’s hospital is in their insurance plan. What are common misconceptions that people have in regards to pediatric care? I think the biggest one that I faced is that parents just don’t know. Parents may not understand that an Photo Provided “When you listen to the debate on Capitol Hill … you don’t hear people talking about the impact on children.” washingtonFAMILY.com February 2018 11 |
| Photo Provided Dr. Newman interacts with a patient. Early in your career, many doctors What has been most fulf illing for preferred to work with adults over you in your career? children. Why? I feel most fulfilled when I’ve taken care of a child and they come back five, 10 or 20 years later and I see that they’ve grown up and overcome these odds. It takes a special commitment to care for children and families. It’s way more complicated because the discussions are more involved. You’re thinking about the children, growth, development and family dynamic. As science and focus began to be applied to children, there was a greater understanding among doctors. It’s evolved in the last 50 or 60 years. When I first started, there may not have been a universal understanding, but now I think hospitals and doctors have come to understand. Now there are specialists for children like orthopedics, anesthesia and psychiatry. They are the ones that understand the resilience. 12 February 2018 washingtonFAMILY.com Where would you like to see pediatric medicine go in the future? The frontier of pediatric medicine is so exciting. All technological and scientific advancements coming to the forefront will have an impact on eliminating diseases. It is possible that a genetic illness caught during infancy or prenatally can be corrected. This early detection could avoid something like diabetes or heart disease or even Alzheimer’s. I think that is not far away. We need to do more like with mental illness in children. Twenty percent of children have mental or behavioral illness. We can do better by intervening early. I think the future is really, really bright for what science and technology can bring. But the responsibility is on us to make those investments because it’s not going to happen if we don’t make our children a priority. In the back of the book, Dr. Newman offers eight tips on how parents can get the best medical care for their children. “Healing Children” is available both online and in stores. | HELPING YOUR Anxious CHILD BY LORI BAUDINO A bout 30 percent of girls and 20 percent of boys — totaling 6.3 million teens — have had an anxiety disorder, according to data from the National Institute of Mental Health. Experts suspect that these statistics are on the low end of what’s really happening, since many people do not seek help for anxiety and depression. A 2015 report from the Child Mind Institute found that only about 20 percent of young people with a diagnosable anxiety disorder get treatment. Dr. Lori Baudino, a board certified dance and movement therapist and licensed clinical psychologist, believes that anxiety in children today is rising because of exposure to more parental worries, more violence, more media, more stimulation and more expectations. Fortunately, there are many ways to support children to help overcome these discomforts and to set them up for ease. The following are five ways to support a child that is exhibiting anxious, fearful or distress symptoms: 1. TAKE NOTICE OF YOUR CHILD’S NONVERBAL CUES. It’s easy to notice the presence of anxiety when you know what to look for — just take a look at your child’s nonverbal communication. Identifying unusual patterns of eye contact, shoulder shrugs, a trembling lip, posture changes and shaky or fidgeting hands can be some initial signs of anxiety. If you start to suspect something is off, investigate further by asking your child if he or she ever experiences a combination of issues like sweating 16 February 2018 washingtonFAMILY.com palms, racing heart or trouble sleeping. These are clear signs of anxiety. 2. ENCOURAGE OPEN COMMUNICATION. Open communication is necessary if you want to help manage your child’s anxiety. Create special time for your child each day to have a conversation about his or her feelings, opinions and thoughts. When having this discussion, make sure to validate these feelings and keep a positive, non-judgmental attitude. Never dismiss what your child is saying with “You’re fine.” Instead, say something like “What is causing you to feel this way?” Anxious children will often remain silent about their issues if they feel like they aren’t being understood. 3. TEACH YOUR CHILD TO EMBRACE ANXIOUS THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS. People with anxiety usually do everything they can to avoid what is making them anxious. They tend to put off tasks that are the source of their anxiety or become suddenly reclusive when faced with an upcoming anxiety-provoking event. However, in doing this, the individual ends up maintaining the anxiety, which eventually makes the problem much worse. Try and teach your child that the best way to deal with their worries is to acknowledge them right away — to accept that these feelings exist and take immediate steps to diminish them. Pushing away |
| feelings and thoughts, hoping they will eventually go away on their own, will just make overcoming the issue much more stressful in the end. Although this is not an easy task for someone with anxiety, with daily practice, it can dramatically help reduce anxiety over time. 4. TRY MOVEMENT. An alternative way of treating anxiety is through dance and movement therapy. Consider enrolling your child in dance/ movement therapy sessions, which can create ways to express psychological and emotional experiences through the mind and body connection, ultimately transforming words into action. The dance movements range from simple breathing to jumping, running, gross motor skills and even watching movement. This therapeutic modality provides children the opportunity to work through psychological challenges, gain control, ease discomfort, express their feelings about their anxieties and to be a child again. 5. DE-STRESS EVERY DAY. Learning how to mentally and physically calm down when anxiety strikes is something every anxious child should know how to do. Even the most basic relaxation exercises can make a big improvement in reducing stress and anxiety. Simple practices like taking a few deep, slow breaths when anxious thoughts arise, or closing the eyes and creating a mental picture of a relaxing scenario can help to ease an anxious mind. In addition, teaching your child to adopt the mindset of living in the present can be tremendously beneficial. Anticipatory anxiety can be tackled by practicing mindfulness — being aware of the moment — observing the sounds, sights, and touch of the present. Mindfulness has been proven to help support unwanted stressors. It’s important to know that all anxiety is not the same. If you find that your child’s anxiety is becoming too difficult to manage, don’t be afraid to seek professional help. The most important thing is to make sure your child is taking the right steps to resolve the problem. Lori M. Baudino, PsyD, BC-DMT, is a licensed clinical psychologist and board-certified dance movement therapist. She works extensively in private practice specializing in children and parents. washingtonFAMILY.com February 2018 17 |

Rhythmic, repeated motion Relationship problems, child-rearing issues, is particularly soothing to the mind and body. and job or money woes are just some of life’s A long walk, cycling, swimming or running will complications that can weigh people down — all work, but any kind of movement relieves tension, and cause health problems. “It’s difficult to stay healthy and energized when stress is a daily reality,” says Dr. Greg Wells, author of improves circulation and clears your mind. 2. GET INTO NATURE. Head to the garden, the park or the woods to lower your blood pressure, strengthen your “The Ripple Effect: Eat, Sleep, Move and Think Better.” immune system, reduce tension and depression and “Chronic stress can damage your body, threaten your boost your mood. “It’s stunning how good it is for your mental health, put a strain on relationships and take the health to be in nature,” Wells says. “And I recommend joy out of life.” you leave the cell phone and earbuds at home.” But there’s no reason to surrender to stress, Wells says. 3. PRACTICE YOGA OR TAI CHI. Therapy, yoga and He suggests seven techniques that can help you have a Tai Chi are good ways to decrease stress and anxiety, healthier “thought life” and recover from chronic stress: increase energy and boost the immune system. 22 February 2018 washingtonFAMILY.com |
| They also give you more stamina — needed in stressful times — and improve the quality of your sleep. Don’t be so quick to conclude that you “can’t handle” a stressful situation. “This is truly a mind- over-matter opportunity,” Wells says. “Believing that you are strong and resourceful actually makes you stronger and more resourceful.” Don’t give in to negative self-talk about not having what it takes to manage life, he says. 4. “ Ultimately, it’s important to remember that your thoughts have a strong influence over stress levels,” Wells says. “What you choose to think about, or not think about, dictates how your body and mind react to everyday life.” CHANGE THE NATURE OF THE RESPONSE. Research indicates that taking an active, problem- solving approach to life’s challenges relieves stress and can transform it into something positive. If you withdraw, deny the problem or spend all your time venting, you’ll feel helpless. Instead, Wells says, be determined to make a change, put effort into it and plan for better results. 5. PRACTICE SLOW, DEEP BREATHING. Start applying the power of deep breathing each day. It will make a huge difference. Wells recommends you start small by taking three deep breaths each time you sit down at your desk — in the morning, after breaks, after lunch and so on. It will help you become more patient, calm and relaxed. 6. BLOCK TIME FOR SINGLE-TASKING. Each day, schedule time in your calendar for focusing exclusively on one task. This task should be something that is important to you. “People love to talk about multi-tasking, but while doing several things at once might make it seem as if you are working hard, it’s an illusion,” Wells says. Your body and mind are not designed to work that way, and it causes extra stress. Greg Wells is an authority on high performance and human physiology. Wells’ latest book, The Ripple Effect: Eat, Sleep, Move and Think Better, hit shelves earlier this year. Check him out at DrGregWells.com. washingtonFAMILY.com February 2018 23 |

| FAMILY TIES BY GINA GALLUCCI-WHITE Elle n in th Sherid an i e M n h er i son ckey M the ce nter ou s Eth e , l ef an, t righ shir t, abo ; t v e; amp has always been a family experience for Ellen Sheridan. From fourth to ninth grade, Sheridan went to Camp Harlam in the Poconos, a camp that continues to provide recreational and educational activities for Reform Jewish youth today. Both of Sheridan’s older sisters also attended, so when she was old enough, she begged her parents to go. “It was a great, wonderful experience,” she recalls. Most adults can only remember their camp adventures, but Sheridan is one of many former Maryland campers who returns to volunteer, or in some cases, to oversee a summer camp, making the experience truly a family aff air. This summer, Sheridan and her son, Ethan, will enter their eighth year at Camp Airy in Thurmont. He is a camper, and she works for a week as a nurse to earn reduced tuition. The all-boys camp, which has a sister camp, Camp Louise, for girls, is a Jewish-focused overnight camp. “We both love it,” she says. “Every year he goes, he likes it more and has just an incredible life-changing experience.” 32 February 2018 washingtonFAMILY.com Sheridan’s older sister Donna also continues to work as a nurse there, even though her two boys have aged out. The camp has fi ve nurses and two physicians on staff each week. This will be the fourth year the sisters have worked together. “Not many people get to say they can work with their sibling side by side, even if it is only for a week, so that is a neat kind of bonding thing for us,” she says. “It’s a busy week but it is a healthy, fun week.” Sheridan’s mother also att ended Camp Louise one year, but her experience was cut short after a camper was suspected of having polio, and all the campers were sent home as a precaution. Sheridan enjoys the friendships with staff members and being around the campers. “It’s a fun week,” she says. “The kids are fun. They are a really good group of kids. They are very appreciative of what we do. They are a little bit homesick, so you are a parent figure (to them) for a little while.” Alicia Berlin first went to Camp Louise at age 10 with her best friend, whose mother also worked as a nurse at the facility. She became extremely homesick. But after a phone call with her mother, she realized she had a choice: Be miserable or make the most of the situation. She chose the latter and has pretty much been at the camp ever since as a camper, counselor, unit leader, assistant director and now as camp director. “It is pretty amazing when you think about the impact that camp has on campers; not only while they are there, but for years afterward,” Berlin says. “People will often think back to their camp days with such fond memories. The fact that I am in charge of camp and am the director; it is a big responsibility to create this amazing community. People are going to not only enjoy in the summer, but have these memories they hold onto forever. I don’t take that lightly at all. I want to make sure we continue to provide the amazing experience and community for our kids.” Compass: unanaranja/iStock / Getty Images Plus; Photo frame: voinSveta/iStock / Getty Images Plus; wSheridan photos: provided C When s generation continue the camp e experienc |
| “Having camp as a second family for all of us has just been incredibly important and meaningful in our lives.” — Alicia Berlin Alicia B erlin, se cond fro with he m left; r family today, ri ght Berlin’s husband, Neil, went to Camp Airy and now works for both camps as director of operations. When asked if there are any drawbacks to working with your spouse, Berlin says no, because the two are so passionate about camp and share that common mission. The couple has three daughters and “they have been here at camp since the day they were born.” Her in- laws, as well as her parents, also work at the camp during the summer, watching their grandchildren and working with campers. Both Berlin’s mom and her mother-in-law went to Camp Louise as campers. “It truly is a family affair,” she says. “Having camp as a second family for all of us has just been incredibly important and meaningful in our lives.” In 1966, Pete Rice decided to buy Echo Hill Camp after years of running camps there through his job at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. Today, his son, Pete Jr., owns and serves as director of the Worton-based camp and his wife, Libby, works there as a registered nurse along with their three children: Katie Rice Moulsdale serves as assistant director; Julie Rice Blyman is employed as an assistant director and waterfront director during camp season; and Pete Rice III works as director of operations and an assistant director. Moulsdale says the camp is her favorite location in the world and helped shape the person she is today. “It’s just an exceptional place and we love it, and it is a part of who we are and our life,” she says. “We all live 10 minutes away, too. We are very much centered around this place. ... Working with your family is really a unique and special experience. Thankfully we get along really well and we have “My siblings and I are best friends. We get to spend three Februarys attached at the hips, and that is a pretty cool experience.” R ice the same visions and goals, so that makes it easy. My siblings and I are best friends. We get to spend three Februarys attached at the hips and that is a pretty cool experience. Not only is the camp a family affair for her own family, but also for people who come there at an early age as campers and later stay on as counse lors. “Helping children have the time of their lives is ... incredibly fulfilling,” Moulsdale says. “Making the experience for them that I had, and hundreds of other children had, is just really cool.” ily Fam — Katie Rice Moulsdale washingtonFAMILY.com February 2018 33 |

| In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt; stir well. In separate large bowl, whisk together egg, buttermilk, unsalted butter, vanilla extract and food coloring. Add to flour mixture; stir to combine. Allow mixture to sit 5 minutes. Heat nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Brush with oil or butter. Add about 1/4 cup batter to skillet. Cook about 2 minutes, or until bubbles start to form on top. Flip and cook 1-2 minutes, or until bottom is lightly browned. Serve immediately with butter, powdered sugar, syrup and berries, if desired. Tip: If using pancake or cookie cutters, be sure to coat with oil so pancakes don’t stick. Place cutters in skillet and pour batter into cutters. Remove cutters before flipping.
