| FAMILY blog V alentine’s Day is fast approaching, and love and romance are in the air! Seeing as I got engaged this past September, my FAMILY co-workers agreed it was only fitting I write this month’s blog and share my proposal story. My boyfriend, Alex, and I went on a European vacation in late September for about two weeks. Our first stop was Vienna, Austria, then we traveled to Munich for Oktoberfest, then Prague and lastly, Berlin. Prague had always been my dream vacation spot, but after almost 10 miles of walking from the Prague Castle, accidently crashing a monastery’s gallery opening, and getting lost in Petrin Hill, I was utterly exhausted. Alex wanted to see one last place and I reluctantly obliged. We arrived at Vrtba Garden, and not to sound ungrateful, but after almost two weeks of traveling through Europe, the castles and gardens start to look very similar to each other. I plopped down on the nearest stoop while Alex took pictures. Behind me was a spiral staircase leading up to a balcony. I asked Alex, “What’s up there?” and he replied, “Let’s go find out.” It took me a minute to stand, but I mustered the energy. When I reached the top of the stairs, I saw a small white triangular table, a champagne bottle, two champagne flutes and a bouquet of flowers. I didn’t think it was for me, since Alex had been by my side the entire time. (Unless he’s secretly Superman flying around and I don’t know!) Nevertheless, the table ended up being for me. He turned to me, grabbed my hands, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I obviously wouldn’t be writing this if I had said, “no!” After I realized what just happened, I looked at the stunning view which overlooked the city and finally my ring (which was a temporary fill-in, since we were traveling, but had “will you marry me?” engraved on the inside). As much as I hate to admit, I started crying — the ugly face crying too. When I composed myself, I turned to my fiancé and asked, “how?” He smiled and told me he’d started planning this 6 February 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com day months in advance — before we even knew we were going on vacation. After we finalized our vacation plans, he hired a company that specializes in proposals and asked both of my parents’ permission before we went on the trip. As if that wasn’t enough, he also made special dinner reservations at the Chateau Tower, which consisted of a three-course menu, a personal waiter, music (the amazing Whitney Houston), a rose- pedaled spiral staircase with candles and a 360-degree view of Prague. It was beyond anything I could dream for my proposal. Prague has a naturally romantic, mystical atmosphere to it and I am so lucky to have someone who would go to such lengths to make it so memorable. To top it off, the next day was my birthday, spent with my wonderful fiancé in my dream city. What more could a girl ask for? I realize how lucky I am to have such an amazing proposal story, so thank you for indulging me in sharing it. No matter where you are or what your situation, I wish you all love, adventure and surprises. Whether you’re swept off your feet by a romantic proposal, or just told “I love you” by someone special, I hope you feel appreciated this Valentine’s Day! Loloz are all-natural, anti-germ lollipops that contain absolutely no sugar – woo hoo! (703) 819-9796 That all sounds great, but how do they taste? My kids were very excited to get a lollipop treat at home. We tested the orange flavor and it was surprisingly very tasty. The kids seemed to have no idea they were eating a “health-benefitting” candy, and I felt much better about them sucking on one: a win-win! What a 16 February 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com TEXT CHRISTY PETRAK great way to satisfy a sweet-tooth while working to combat oral germs and tooth decay. So, it was a bit disappointing when I finally read the usage instructions. In order to get the promised oral health benefits from Loloz, they recommend two a day for 10 consecutive days (morning and evening), two to four times per year. While this may work for adults or older children who can understand the benefits of using them this way, I just cannot give my toddlers two lollipops per day. It would be too hard to break the habit and explain the difference between a candy lollipop and a “healthy” one. Since they look and taste exactly like their regular, sugary cousin, I imagine it would be a very confusing scenario for toddlers/ preschoolers. (It is important to note that the lollipops work best when combined with regular dentist visits and proper oral health habits.) Loloz are currently available in three all- natural flavors: orange, lemon and berry. They come in lollipop or lozenge form, in boxes of 20 for $29.99. The cost seemed quite high at first for a small lollipop, but is justified in the cavity-fighting aspect. With no noticed difference in appearance or flavor, I would consider stocking up on these to replace the regular, sugary lollipops in my bag for a less-guilty option, but would not expect to use them as directed until my children are much older. |

The toothpaste has a slightly different texture than my normal toothpaste and doesn’t taste strongly of mint. However, it left my mouth feeling just as clean and protected by the fluoride. The mouthwash was the most intriguing product to me, especially the unflavored version. I was excited for the alcohol-free aspect, but skeptical of its ability to leave mouth feeling clean without the typical minty flavor. Surprisingly, I didn’t mind the unflavored version. It seemed almost like rinsing with pure water, yet left my mouth feeling clean and my breath quite fresh. It came with a peppermint flavoring oil, so I tried a bit of that in my next rinse. It gave the rinse more of the traditional but was still not overpowering. The JustRight Mint also produced the same results: fresh breath with a hint minty flavor. The biggest positive for me was the of burning and irritation I’ve felt with other I have been using the mouthwash for several weeks now and haven’t seen any signs of staining. | Sleep-Away Camp: TEXT Gayla Grace Letting Go Helps Kids Grow S leep-away camp was just what Ally needed in order to gain independence and confidence, marveled her mom, Sharon. “She found a whole new group of girls and had a ball; she’s had a hard time with girls beginning in grade 4,” Sharon says, “so it was great for her to bond with girls in a different setting.” Starting at age 9, Ally went away to camp for a week. The following summer she begged for it to be four. Her parents were delighted. Time away from parents helps kids learn how to make their own decisions without checking with mom or dad first, and residential camp provides the perfect training ground, says Michael Thompson in his book, Homesick and Happy: How Time Away From Parents Can Help a Child Grow (Random House; 2012). If you’d like your kids to develop maturity and gain independence (and if you’d like to begin learning to let go yourself!), it’s time to start researching sleep-away camps. Week- or month-long adventures away from home give kids opportunities to experience unique adventures they’d never find at home. Asking other parents what camps their kids attend can be helpful also; having a friend go with your child is a beautiful thing for parents leery of separation. To find a camp that fits your child’s needs, seek out opinions from friends and neighbors, ask teachers and church counselors, attend camp fairs and explore options on your own. Residential camps of all kinds and sizes are located all across the country, so there’s sure to be one your child can love and from which he can gain valuable skills. Camp counselor Jamie Newman expresses enthusiasm for sending kids to camp. “Camp encourages kids to 28 February 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com try new things and teaches them confidence through new experiences. They learn valuable life lessons when encouraged to work through their fears to try something even if it doesn’t feel comfortable to them. Also, when kids are thrown together in a cabin for a week, they’re forced to learn how to get along with others and often build lasting relationships that can continue when they return home.” Need more convincing? Here are a few thoughts to consider: 1) Camp builds maturity and allows children the chance to make their own decisions in a safe, caring environment. Kids benefit from new relationships with camp counselors who care about them and want to help them with everyday struggles. 2) Camp forces kids to unplug from technology and enjoy the beauty and benefits of nature. Through outside activities, kids find new hobbies without academic pressure or expectations. Kids gain self-confidence through trying new things and discovering talents they didn’t know they had. 3) Camp teaches good sportsmanship by encouraging each child to be fair and kind. Team activities teach kids how to cooperate with each other and the value of getting along with others through working together and supporting one another. 4) Camp fosters new friendships with kids who come from varying backgrounds — helping kids gain an understanding of how others live outside their community. In a relaxed atmosphere, kids easily make friends while they play, sing, work, eat and bunk together. |
| Summer camps 5) Camp creates life-long memories of new adventures in places they’ve never experienced before. Camp offers carefree days where kids can learn how to thrive outside the structure of over-scheduled days. Homesickness and “Child Sickness” When it comes to sending a child to sleep-away camp, plenty of parents say, “Well, she’s ready for camp, but I’m not ready for her to leave!” According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, homesickness is defined as “distress and functional impairment caused by an actual or anticipated separation from home and attachment objects such as parents.” For child sickness, the same can be true except it pertains to what parents experience when their child is away. Those who suffer from the condition feel some form of anxiety, sadness and nervousness, and most distinctly, obsessive preoccupation with thoughts of their child. | 7 indoor Winter Crafts TEXT TIFFANY DOERR GUERZON own snowballs, snow people or mountains. Refrigerate the snow before play for a “cool” sensory experience. 2. Vanilla Scented “Cookie” Playdough: Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract to the ingredients of the Cooked Playdough Recipe (p. 43) and then cook, cool and knead as directed. Give kids this delicious smelling dough along with a rolling pin and cookie cutters to create pretend cookies. I 3. Scented Sparkle Playdough: Add three drops lavender or peppermint essential oil, plus a few drops food coloring to the ingredients in the Cooked Playdough Recipe (p. 43), and then cook and cool as directed. Place the dough on a cutting board or mat and sprinkle with glitter. Let the kids knead in the glitter, then play! Experiment with fine and chunky glitter in a variety of colors. 1. Pretend Snow: Pour 1 cup baking soda into a large bowl. Add shaving cream, a squirt at a time, mixing after each addition with a spoon. When the “snow” starts to form a ball, continue mixing and kneading the mixture with your hands. Once the “snow” is the consistency you like, stop adding shaving cream. If it gets too wet, simply add more baking soda. This pretend snow molds well and is lots of fun for kids to dig into and create their 4. Coffee Filter Snowflakes: Flatten a white coffee filter into a circle. Fold the filter in half, then into quarters, then eighths. It should look like a pie slice. Cut shapes along the edges of the wedge, then open and smooth out for the perfect snowflake! The great thing about this project is kids can cut the folded coffee filter on any side and it will still open into a single, beautiful snowflake. f the weather is too frightful to play outside, or if your kids are longing for snow, try one of these indoor winter activities. Play with pretend snow, grow crystals, jazz up plain old playdough, paint like Jack Frost or create three-dimensional painted snowpeople to liven up a dreary winter afternoon. | 5. Overnight crystals: Gather a few small, clear glass jars. Clear glass candle votives, mason jars or even wine glasses work well. The recipe for these crystals is simple: equal parts Epsom salt and hot water. For a quart-sized Mason jar, use 1 cup salts/1 cup water. For a pint-sized Mason jar, use ½ cup salts/ ½ cup hot water, and for a small votive or wine glass, ¼ cup salts/ ¼ cup hot water. You can adjust amounts according to the jars you use, just be sure to measure the amount of Epsom salts you use so that you can add an equal amount of water. Pour the measured Epsom salt into the bottom of your jar. Next pour hot water over the salts. Use the hottest water you can get from your tap. Stir this mixture for two minutes. You can add a drop of liquid watercolors to the hot water to tint the crystals before mixing the water into the salts if you like. It’s best to make a few batches, just in case one doesn’t grow. Next, put your jars in the freezer for 10 minutes. Remove the jars from the freezer and place in the refrigerator and allow to grow overnight. In the morning, gently pour off any excess liquid from the jars and enjoy your crystals! 6. Jack Frost Paintings: Mix equal parts Epsom salt and warm water. Give kids paint brushes of various widths and they can dip the brushes into the Epsom salt solution and paint snowflakes or other designs onto dark-colored construction paper. Dark blue and black-colored paper work best. As the water evaporates from the paper, beautiful crystals are left behind. 7. Puffy Paint Snow People: This fun, inexpensive puffy paint spreads like frosting and dries into beautiful 3-D paintings. To make puffy paint, mix equal parts white shaving cream and white liquid glue. This paint can be hard to wash out of bowls, so mix this in either a disposable container or in a gallon-size resealable plastic bag. If you mix up the paint in a container, give kids popsicle sticks or disposable, plastic knives for “painting.” Paintbrushes don’t work well. If you use a plastic bag, mix ingredients by kneading the sealed bag with your hands until well combined. Squeeze the paint into one corner of the bag, and then snip off the corner with scissors. Kids can “paint” by squeezing out the puffy paint from the bag as they would a pastry bag. It is difficult to make precise lines and shapes with this paint. The best kinds of pictures to create with puffy paint are ice cream cones, snow people, cupcakes, etc. You can color the paint by adding a few drops of liquid watercolor paint, or use food coloring. Or, add texture to the paint by drawing lines with disposable forks before it dries. For added bling, give the masterpiece a sprinkling of glitter before it dries. Allow to dry 12-24 hours, more if the paint is extra thick! TEXT NANCY S. Cooked Playdough Recipe: 1 cup flour ½ cup salt 1 tablespoon cooking oil 2 teaspoons cream of tartar Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture forms a ball. Remove the dough from the pan to a plate or cutting board and allow to cool completely. When cool, knead the dough with your hands until smooth. Store in a sealed container or bag in the refrigerator. Tiffany Doerr Guerzon is a freelance writer and the mother of three children. | O nce upon a time, a health-conscious shopper had to try a specialty store to find products made with the "super fruits," exotic gems like acai and goji berries, which are reportedly high on the ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) scale. These foods are rich in antioxidants, which serve as natural protection for healthy body cells. Pleas Imme e Proof diate P ly le ! ase Imme Proof diate Fax to 703-318-5509 ly! Many believe antioxidants can aid in protecting the body from cancerous cells and other ailments. Whatever your take is on these super fruits, you probably know they have gained mainstream popularity in recent years. Now you can visit your chain grocer to find supplements, juices and other foods enhanced with acai and another popular fruit, mangosteen. In fact, it looks nothing like a mango! Mangosteens are round and purple and indigenous to tropical climates. When you cut one open, you'll find the large white bulbous pulp — the only edible part of the fruit. The flavor of the mangosteen, some argue, is difficult to pinpoint. It’s a touch citrus and a touch sweet, with even a tinge of sourness. Only in the last few years, too, have Americans been able to buy this fruit domestically (that is, if you know where to go). The health conscious, however, may be more likely to find mangosteen in juice form. The Benefits of Mangosteen Antioxidant-rich foods are believed to attack free radicals in the body responsible for aging and various degenerative illnesses that come with growing older. Some of the benefits that may come with the regular partaking of mangosteen include: |
| Reduced feelings of anxiety and depression. The stress of work and family problems can get to us at times, and certain foods have been known to aid in helping us feel better, or the very least, less stressed. The free radicals that pose a threat to mental health may be eradicated with antioxidant intake. Reduced feelings of pain. If you suffer from the aches and pains of everyday life, or more serious ailments like arthritis, you may wish to search for natural methods of relief. The antioxidants in mangosteen have been known to help people regain comfortable mobility. Improved bone mass. wrinkle around the eyes. While getting older is inevitable, there are ways to combat rapid aging. Fruits rich in antioxidants, like mangosteen, aid in your overall health and youthful feeling. Strengthened immunity. When you eat right and try natural fruits with high ORAC ratings, you can reduce the chance of getting sick and increase the bounce back, from a cold or fever. When we were little, our mothers may have given us some Vitamin C to cure our ills. Vitamins are important to a daily regimen, but adding the goodness of mangosteen can also do wonders. If you are not able to find the actual purple fruit in your store, look for products that contain it. Some may be blended with other fruits like dark berries or citrus, but either way, adding it to your diet can work wonders. Improvement to skin. If you have experienced problems like rashes or acne, regular intake of a super fruit may help clear any such problems and leave you looking and feeling younger.
