For years, parents have been hearing that kids have too many activities, too much homework, too- heavy backpacks, too much screen time, too much sugar… and on and on. This is where after-school activities come in, preferably with dedicated, motivating coaches and instructors leading the way. Physical activities increase coordination, inspire discipline and provide energy outlets for restless kids. So, let another trusted adult be in charge for a change, and enjoy your down time while your kids get more fit. Personally, I find most parents are intelligent, conscientious and trying to find a healthy middle ground for everyone in the family. They want their kids to have just the right amount of after-school activities. The vast majority seem committed to helping their kids become happier, healthier, more well-rounded citizens without pushing them into activity overload. Lights Who Shine. As much as we would like our kids to carry on our values and ideals, it’s really up to them to communicate who they are and what they believe. And while we may like to think that our children are born whole and complete, the truth is kids often discover what they are made of after they become immersed in activities that stretch and challenge them. Engaging kids in activities where they feel fully immersed in the experience and are responsible for their own mastery helps them discover what makes them tick. When it comes to finding an activity for your child, look for outlets that challenge them while providing gradual instruction and skill development. Why not focus on what kids stand to gain from after-school activities instead? I contacted a half-dozen after-school activity pros, and here are some of the many benefits. Fit, Confident Kids. As Elle Woods reminds us in the film Legally Blonde, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy.” But, motivating kids to get off the couch is not always easy for parents. Your kids are not typically looking to you to motivate them to run some wind-sprints or do a series of gut crunches. They need someone else to step in and motivate them to get moving. 10  April 2015  washingtonFAMILY.com 10  August 2015  washingtonFAMILY.com Part of Something Greater. After-school activities offer kids outlets for expressing their energy within a safe learning context. Feeling part of a group with a purpose is a beautiful thing, so make sure the space where your child spends time is safe, fun and growth-centric. Often, kids become as attached to a center, a studio, or a routine as much as they do to a group of peers. When kids go off to their activities, they should feel like they are going to one of their favorite places – to their home away from home. If this is not the case for your child, then you might want to check out other possibilities. Memorably Connected. If there is one thing all after-school activity professionals agree on, it’s the importance of making memories via meaningful connections. Engaged, smiling, busy children are typically happy children. Whether your child’s activity happens in a place rife with variety or in a more specialized space, your child is sure to grow over time, make memories and understand herself better with regular participation in after- school activities. Why not let your kids have the continuity of years of ongoing participation. It’s hard to advance up the activity ranks if you dabble in one activity and then another. Give your child a few years in elementary school to try different activities, then see if they want to commit to an activity or two during middle school. They can always switch to different activities once they get to high school, if they wish. addresses specific needs like standardized test preparation or responding to learning gaps. Other kids simply need help becoming more satisfied students. Tutoring can definitely increase not just aptitude but also enthusiasm. And just as parents don’t always make the best coaches, we also don’t always make the best tutors, either. Besides, kids often progress faster and more willingly when they work with mentors they don’t already know. Raising academic confidence by teaching learning skills in one subject can pay off in increased academic confidence across the board. So if your child is struggling with critical reading, vocabulary or math skills, why not try a local tutoring service? Your child has nothing to lose and much to gain. Pleas e Imme Proof diate 703-318-5509 ly! Kids need to feel successful today to become successful tomorrow, and activities can help them experience positive growth gradually. If you don’t channel your child’s energy, playing video games, TV watching, and other sedentary activities will always be a temptation. If you want engaged, involved, smiling kids, find them some activities they enjoy. You will be so glad you did. Despite the pain, embarrassment or judgment it might cause, she is frank about her experiences. Finland admits to being largely absent in the childhoods of her other two boys. She expresses frustration about David’s absentmindedness and mourns the lack of warmth and expressions of love and appreciation. Finland also expresses gratitude for her long marriage to Bruce. His maturity, empathy, commitment and kindness helped bolster their marriage; other couples might have divorced from the complicated, heavy weight of raising a child with special needs. As the mother of three young children myself, none of them with special needs, I nodded as Finland pointed out the obvious—taking care of a child from birth to adulthood is a parent’s job. With a special needs child, those 18 years are jam-packed in a way it’s hard for me to appreciate. Early on in his childhood, Finland and her husband wonder: What about when David reaches adulthood? How can we help him grow and strengthen his wings so he can gain independence and live a fulfilling, productive, T TEXT KATE SCHWARZ oday alone, 68 parents will be told their child has autism. One child will be diagnosed every 20 minutes. This fact makes autism the fastest growing developmental disorder in the United States. We can safely bet that we’ll know someone with autism—so let’s equip ourselves with empathy and patience, and a few facts. Next Stop is a great place to start. Local author and mother, Glen Finland, describes the heart-warming, heart-wrenching experiences she had while raising her third son, David, who was diagnosed with autism and 14  April 2015  washingtonFAMILY.com 14  August 2015  washingtonFAMILY.com independent life? Those questions are difficult and tricky given David’s needs, but Finland shares the answers, along with lessons learned along the way. Educating David taught Finland that they “should have kept our son in public school and our money in our wallet as long as possible, because we will need it for what happens next. Because what happens next is the rest of his life.” They looked for and tried several solutions: David attended a life skills school in Florida for two years, then came home. He looked for a group home in which to live, but his own home was still the best place for him. He searched for a job at a time when the government was By: Glen Finland cutting jobs for differently-abled workers, unsuccessful for nearly a year. The jobs he did end up with (I cheered that one was for my beloved Washington Nationals) required big-hearted individuals willing to be the ones to accommodate David’s needs and personality. At the same time that Finland helps David grow and use his wings, she realizes his disabilities make him more gullible and unable to read social clues that could easily make him a victim, so she and Bruce argued for limited guardianship over David. They also opened a special needs trust to take care of him should they suddenly pass away. The natural “letting go” of a child, I realize, is infinitely more complicated when that child has special needs. Finland wrote the book to create a collage of words and memories for her David, and she included her other sons’ views of him, as well as her husband’s. The end result is a loving portrait of a special guy whose family loves him fiercely. And despite the fact that David still frustrates all of them, sometimes on a daily basis, they’ve grown to love him for who he is, rather than resent him for who he is not. That’s the sort of acceptance we all could learn from. Finland writes that it “seems like every new adventure with David offers us a chance to see the best and worst in people.” I wish for all parents—whether their children have special needs or not—to read Next Stop to learn from her experience with David. With his image in our minds, maybe we can approach the next autistic child and his/her parents with a little more empathy and patience. Knowing a little more of what they might be facing and feeling, we can give that parent and child our best. Kate Schwarz is a full-time mom and wife living in Great Falls, VA. M y 13-year-old son, Jonathan, is a solid B student with no learning or behavioral issues. He has a September birthday, and I chose not to hold him back a year, so he is much younger than most of his classmates. I decided to send him to classes at the Empowered Learning Transformation Center to help prepare him for the rigors of high school. As all DMV parents know, this is a competitive area, so I do often feel pressure that his B’s should be A’s. More important than his grades for me though, is his quality of life. He struggles at times with his homework load, and it can often take him hours, so even being able to complete his work more quickly would be a big plus. That extra homework time could be spent doing something he loves, or just relaxing after a stressful day. I chose Empowered Learning because they don’t just focus on traditional tutoring methods. They work on body/mind integration, and I was intrigued by their approach to fuse educational and medical technology to “rewire” the brain for learning. Even though our session lasted an hour and The centers have a 20-year track record, a half, it wasn’t boring or tedious, and Peter and their success stories were impressive. It kept Jonathan’s attention and had excellent sounded like a good fit for my son, and their rapport with him. I was sent a complete new Bethesda, MD, location was convenient for me by metro. At our first session, we met with the Center’s co-founder, Peter Riddle. Peter did a thorough physical exam with Jonathan, testing his balance, coordination, eye focus and attention. He also did a series of cognitive tests. Jonathan was engaged and interested throughout the entire process. After the physical and cognitive testing, Peter showed Jonathan a 29-letter word and tested his memory spelling it. Of course, my testing report, and as a parent, found it really informative. The biggest indicator of success, though? Jonathan is jazzed about his bi- weekly sessions. There’s nothing worse than having to drag your complaining child to an appointment, so I was relieved and excited that our introductory meeting went so well. Empowered Learning Transformation Centers 8120 Woodmont Avenue, Suite 150 Bethesda, MD 301-654-5919 • eltcenters.com son’s reaction was, “No way can I remember that!” Peter worked with Jonathan on a series Nancy S. is a northern VA mom to son, Jonathan, of exercises breaking down the word into age 13. Like many DMV parents, she works full smaller chunks. By the end of the session, time and strives to find balance in her work and not only could my son spell the entire word by memory, he could do it forward and backward. It really was incredible. I could see Jonathan’s sense of accomplishment right before my eyes! home life. She will be writing a series of reviews about her son’s experiences at the Empowered Learning Transformation Center, so check back to follow his progress. washingtonFAMILY.com  August 2015  37 38 August 2015 washingtonFAMILY.com Pleas e Pleas Imme Proof e diate P r I m m l y ediat ! This year’s study of more than 1,000 American parents and 1,000 teens/pre-teens reveals that parents are most concerned with their kids unknowingly interacting with online predators. This concern seems to have validity; 27 percent of teen/pre-teen respondents indicated that they have met or would meet someone in person who they first met online. Additionally, parents still seem to have the “not my child” mentality. While 94 percent of parents say they are aware of their child’s online behavior, 35 percent of kids admit to bullying others. The tweens and teens surveyed admitted they made fun of other people to someone else (19 percent), called someone fat or ugly or made fun of other physical appearances (16 percent), and tagged mean pictures or threatened someone (10 percent). They charged off the school bus back in June to conquer camp, soak up pool time and max out on family vacations. Their boundless energy is now waning as we enter the dog days of August. It’s time to get creative with family fitness while cementing those final, precious summer memories. Parents should continue setting positive examples and remain active with their kids whenever possible. Swim laps. Maintain your running schedule. Get to the gym. Your participation in these activities reinforces a parent’s unyielding commitment to good health. Now find ways to bring the whole family into the fit fun. Take the whole family out for swim lessons. Who couldn’t use a quick brush up on different strokes? Blast the blues with family dancing shoes. Whether it’s “Just Dance,” an outdoor concert or your family favorites from an IPod, dancing is a fun activity for everyone in the family. Rock climbing, laser tag, or even the cool comfort of an air-conditioned bowling alley offer parents a chance to model healthy behaviors and engage in friendly competition. August is an ideal time to set fitness goals for the fall and winter seasons. Local YMCA branches and community rec centers offer introductory and advanced level indoor sports programs for all age levels. Do the kids intend to participate in a sport at school? Is there an individual goal like running a specific distance event? Does a child wish to take his or her talents to a new sport? Enjoy the good weather. Sample the different sports, and then plan the approach for the upcoming season. For example, the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington offers T-ball, blastball and baseball in progressive programs that emphasize proper technique while having a memorable, fun and rewarding experience. Then, build on the momentum you generate by planning fall activities. As soon as the doors open, many area schools will be planning for the one-mile MCM Kids Run hosted by the Marine Corps Marathon on Oct. 24 in Arlington, VA. Open to children ages 5 to 12, the Kids Run welcomes many schools who use this event as a way to establish a running program and generate motivation among young and often reluctant runners. School, sees student running as a universal sport. “We started a running club to get our students prepared for fall events,” explained Sidebotham. “We feel in this day and age when there are many things vying for students’ attention, it is important to emphasize health and fitness. Running clubs have been one way we’ve done that.” Though running provides excellent health benefits and immediate rewards (who doesn’t love being presented a medal?), it is just one of many fall physical activities. Others, including football and indoor swimming, offer cardiovascular benefits similar to running. By enrolling their kids in these activities during elementary years, parents can help to reinforce the team concept at home and create a lasting enthusiasm for health and fitness. While the end of summer blues could drive many to the sofa, a firm commitment to health and wellness can boost family energy levels. Sandra Osborn-Peters is the MCM community relations coordinator. Parents can register their children for the MCM Kids Run via the MCM website:www.marinemarathon.com/MCM_Weekend/ MCM_Kids_Run.html. Schools can register student groups by contacting sandra.osbornpeters@usmc.mil. Articles in the Healthy Kids Series are presented by Michael B. Sidebotham, Principal of Stafford County’s Grafton Village Elementary the Marine Corps Marathon Kids Run.
