Hence, Banshee Reeks.) Monocacy Aqueduct sounds like a very interesting hike as well, as it’s the largest aqueduct on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. For the last six years, Toby has attended Camp Inclusion, a day camp hosted at Folly Quarter Middle School. He’s surrounded by friends both new and old, has gone on fun fi eld trips like berry picking or museums, and loves the bond with the counselors. They’re his friends, too. Speaking over the phone from his apartment complex in Columbia, MD, with his mother nearby, Toby described why he keeps coming back. “The activities there are really fun to do. The fi eld trips are to fun places. The counselors are really fun to be around,” said Toby, 22. The last two summers, Toby has been a junior counselor at Camp Inclusion, helping out around the camp and acting as an aid to the counselors. He’s aged out of the program, but continues to be involved. Toby was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate. It was surgically repaired 10 April 2017 washingtonFAMILY.com and he has attended speech therapy, but he still has a mild speech impediment. His mother, Marianne, has seen her son blossom in unexpected ways thanks to camp. “Ambition, self confi dence, and just looking forward to Camp Inclusion,” she said. “They have a morning and afternoon program. And he likes to go all day…and he’s not normally a morning person,” she laughed. Camp Inclusion is unlike most summer camps: The majority of campers at Camp Inclusion are special-needs kids. “For me, kids with disabilities can have a stable environment to work within and where they can have a lot of fun, too,” said Toby. “When you say ‘stable environment,’ what do you mean?” asked Marianne. “Not a lot of noise that may distract them.” “Kind of quiet? Not noisy. That’s good for people with autism, right?” said Marianne. Toby agreed. Camp Inclusion lives up to its name. While many of the campers have disabilities, Camp Inclusion is open to all students. For the founders, it’s about equality and ending the stigma surrounding disabilities. “The blending of students with and without special needs is important because it is a basic human right to participate as an active member of society,” said camp co-founder AJ Rosenthal. “Each individual should feel valued and accepted regardless of their diff erences.” With an interest in education, and now a current educator in Howard County, Rosenthal learned through his mentor back in 2009, that there was an achievement gap in the special-needs community. There were many summer programs that focused on one-on-one therapies or camps for the general population, but there were no summer camps specifi cally designed for special-needs students. Rosenthal noticed that these students weren’t being actively engaged in the summer, challenged or partaking in social activities. “Because of that, it was kind of like they were hitting the reset button and starting back at square one at the beginning of the school year,” said Rosenthal. What started as a sports camp for local special-needs children evolved into an all-inclusive day camp with sports, crafts, games, fi eld trips and action-packed activities. “Some of the summer programs the kids end up going to are very academic based,” said Chris Ashcraft, camp administrator. “There is not a lot of time to just learn in that social setting. To be able to have an environment that focuses just on social skills creates a good CONTINUED ON PAGE 12 washingtonFAMILY.com April 2017 11 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11 starting point for kids who are going back to school.” These students can now confi dently answer the age-old question, “What did you do this summer?” Campers can be anyone with or without a cognitive, social or physical disability, ages 12 to 21. Both morning and afternoon sessions are available, but campers can also stay all day. They have had campers with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and many campers are on the Autism spectrum, said Rosenthal. Campers who have aged out, are invited to join their work-study program as a volunteer junior counselor, like Toby Doremus. “To have non-disabled students just want to come and interact with their peers, to assist them and encourage them is a very neat thing to see,” said Rosenthal. “The selfl essness that all these students exhibit is truly incredible.” Campers gain a sense of independence and empowerment, said camp co-founder Dallas Wiles. They are able to choose what activities they’d like to participate in a given day. “When they’re given the freedom and the choice to really enjoy themselves in the summertime, there’s a diff erence you see in the behaviors,” Wiles said. Like Rosenthal, she too is a teacher in Howard On Wednesdays, a local Zumba instructor comes and teaches a high- intensity dance class. On Thursdays, lunch is catered from a local eatery and every Friday there’s a fi eld trip. The campers have visited the Baltimore Zoo, gone bowling, learned crossfi t and even enjoyed a movie at the local theater. The local community has also been imperative to the camp’s growth and success, said both Wiles and Rosenthal. The buses needed for the Friday trip are provided to the camp free of charge. And many local restaurants are happy to provide meals. What’s been the most fulfi lling for the founders is seeing how the camp experiences transition into the classroom and everyday life. Rather, coding is for anyone who enjoys problem solving and experimenting. These coders also have active imaginations and love creating with comput- ers and simple codes. PROGRAMMING IS COLLABORATIVE Coding isn’t always a solitary experience— many of today’s coolest apps, videogames, and online networks are the result of team efforts. Forget the image of the lone program- mer working late into the night and replace it with teamwork, community and friends. A visit to Facebook Headquarters reveals the largest open-offi ce workspace in the world. This is be- cause the best projects are the result of collab- oration. No one can be an expert at every part of coding, so partner- ing with others enables bigger and better out- comes. Plus, having an- other set of eyes to look at a problem with a fresh perspective opens minds to new solutions and bug fi xes. PROGRAMMING IS FUN Don’t be fooled; just because coding puts brains to work doesn’t mean that it’s all se- rious business. The world’s favorite video- games, software and social-networking sites were made possible by the awesome and cre- ative minds of the coders who dreamed them up. Computer science opens the door to mov- ing from consumer to creator. Whether your kid wants to make an animated cat dance the Nae Nae, create a website to share favorite 16 April 2017 washingtonFAMILY.com jokes, or program a robot to do their chores, they get to bring their personality and inter- ests to what they create…and there’s nothing nerdy about that! THE FUTURE OF CODING IS IN YOUR HANDS The only way to break stereotypes is to con- sciously change them. There is a world of endless possibilities open to students interested in computer science. Kids need to know that they are capable, and be empowered by the adults and peers in their lives to fully give CS a try. When enrolled in a coding-focused afterschool program, club or summer camp, kids have the power to use CS to shape the future. Generation Code is an in-school, after-school, and camp based kids coding initiative that seeks to empower students to become creative prob- lem-solvers and digital leaders through pro- ject-and design-based learning. Currently oper- ating in NYC, Generation Code will launch this spring in Washington, D.C. and Vienna, Virginia. It’s not uncommon for these kids to students they conjure fear of the unknown. These know they need the help. ahead are not the most exciting of ideas, but for some feelings may be more deeper rooted than being simply overwhelmed or for a dislike of school. The anxiety caused by time management or organization may be a sign of an executive functioning deficit. Executive functioning skills help with focus, self-control, planning and resisting distractions. These skills allow people to juggle multiple things in their mind at one time, and are important for school. For example, when writing an essay, can you remember to capitalize the letters, use proper punctuation, spell the words really pushback towards their parents’ overtures, even when they But, there are things parents can do to help ensure their child’s success. If you suspect your child has some executive functioning deficits, the first step is to realize that tasks like focusing and planning ahead are just going to be harder for your child than other kids. It’s not that your kid wakes up one morning and says, “You know what? I’m just going to really aggravate my mom,” or “I’m going to frustrate my dad.” Kids want to please. They want to do a good job, but things like correctly and also make sure your writing makes sense? If you can, staying organized and focused are just innately difficult for them. you probably have good executive functioning skills. Help your child create a mental to-do list for what he has to Executive functioning skills also have to do with a thought process: finishing something, starting something new, planning ahead and staying organized along the way. Executive functioning skills get better as kids age. Kids who have executive functioning difficulties often have a hard time staying organized. A messy backpack, forgetfulness with assignments, or bringing home the wrong materials from school, might all be struggles with executive functioning skills. Long-term planning is often very difficult for these students. If an assignment is due two weeks from now, they have a hard time breaking it down into smaller, more manageable chunks. In addition, kids with weak executive functioning skills might have a hard time focusing and putting effort into homework, especially when it’s really not interesting to them. They might even be able to just focus for five or 10 minutes before they lose track. Issues with a child’s executive functioning skills are actually very closely related to Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyper Disorder. A child could have ADD and not the hyperactive part, but they still have an ADHD diagnosis because ADD is no longer labeled. ADHD has to do with things like focusing and sustaining focus for a period of time, and being able to regulate attention. It’s not about paying attention to any one thing; it’s about paying do for homework that day or even plan ahead. When a child is completing an assignment, they may need frequent breaks or have their assignments broken down into smaller pieces, instead of one massive and intimidating project. These students also need more structure. They may not tackle their homework as soon as they return home from school. You may need to engage in a dialogue with your child to make sure they know what they’re going to do first, second or third. You’re also going to have to provide a distraction-free area for him to do homework. If left to his own devices, he’ll often do homework in places like his bedroom, which is really distracting! If your help has gone on deaf ears by your child, consider getting someone else to do the heavy lifting. Often, kids are much more willing to listen to someone who doesn’t have an emotional attachment to them, like a tutor or someone who has training in educational coaching. Educational coaches have the ability to work on three specific areas: organization, time-management of short- and long-term assignments, and study habits. Kids with executive functioning issues get by because they’re really smart, but when the work becomes harder and there’s a lot more of it; they really have a hard time. Having somebody who can work in these three areas is really the key to unlocking their true potential. attention when things are difficult. When it comes to executive functions, sometimes people can have poor executive functioning skills but they may not meet the criteria for ADHD. However, everybody with ADHD does have poor executive functioning skills. 34  April 2017  washingtonFAMILY.com Ann Dolin is the founder and president of Educational Connections Tutoring. Encourage your kids to earn their own money with jobs for neighbors and friends. Arrange for them to have an ATM card so they can withdraw money from their savings account. Help them open a savings account. Encourage them to save their allowance towards a goal (a new toy or DVD). Consider setting up a matching savings plan like most companies do with a 401(k). Start giving them an allowance. This is also a good time to explain bank accounts and what it means when a bank account earns interest. Teach kids that money can be exchanged for things.
