Planting a vegetable garden has many benefits. When you are out in the garden, your stresses seem to fade away as you simply pick weeds and enjoy the day. Vegetable gardening lessens stress by reducing blood pressure and clearing the mind. Gardening helps you save money on groceries as well, and home-grown vegetables are always the best-tasting because you don’t pick the plants until you feel they are perfectly ripe. So why wait? Start planning your vegetable garden today! If you have a patch of dirt in your yard, you can create an outdoor garden. If not, you can buy some sizable pots and create a container garden. Gardening in Pots Container gardening is a great way to begin. If you have poor garden soil, limited space, not enough sunshine in your garden area or impaired mobility, you may want to grow vegetables in containers. Container gardening makes it feasible to position the vegetables in areas where they can receive the quickest growing conditions. Container gardening also affords better pest control. The downside of container gardening is that containers demand TEXT MARY AMOS container culture. Regardless of the type or size of container used, adequate drainage is a necessity for successful yields. It is acceptable to add about 1 inch of coarse gravel in the bottom of the container to improve drainage. Vegetables that grow very well in containers are those with a confined habit of growth, such as salad greens, spinach, Another important thing for you to think about is the location of eggplant, Swiss chard, beets, radish, carrots, peppers, bush beans, your garden. Owner Shannon Link personally welcomed me and my sons to the Stroller Strides class. Shannon has created a welcoming, judgment-free environment and community for moms. Regardless of your fitness level, you can feel comfortable and challenged while exercising. FIT4MOMS also hosts a weekly playgroup and monthly Moms Night Out. Stroller Strides is a 60-minute, total body class taught by certified instructors who specialize in pre- and post-natal fitness. The class incorporates resistance tubing, your stroller and your body weight, and is broken up into different stations, with power walking between stations. Stroller Strides focuses on the muscles and the movements we often use in our daily lives so we can move through motherhood with the physical strength we need. I brought my 5-year-old and 1-year-old sons with me to classs. My 5-year-old sang along to Ring Around the Rosie while everyone in class squat shuffled around the circle of strollers. My kids both laughed and giggled when I tickled them in between squats. With my boys being four years apart, there aren’t many activities they can do together, so it was fantastic to have an activity they both enjoyed. Stroller Strides is a great way to exercise alongside your kids. I definitely broke into a sweat, and felt great the rest of the day. I had more patience with my kids 18  April 2016  washingtonFAMILY.com and felt more energized. Body Back is a child-free, eight-week program that includes nutrition education and high intensity interval training workouts in an intimate setting. Classes are capped to 10 participants, which allows the instructor to give everyone personal one-on-one time, either during or after the classes. Body Back was a much more intense workout than Stroller Strides. I was more physically challenged during the class, and throughout the workout Shannon encouraged us that “we are strong moms” and “you can do this.” The last 10 minutes of class were guided meditations, which were fantastic. This time allowed me to relax and let the stress melt away. It was really refreshing to have an hour all to myself where I could focus on me. Many of the moms who have attended Body Back classes have experienced physical and emotional transformations, and you can see their personal testimonials on the FIT4MOM website (lortonspringfield.fit4mom.com). I enjoyed both the Stroller Strides and Body Back programs. I appreciate that there are options to workout with or without my kids. Most of all, I enjoyed that they are mom-centered fitness classes focused on giving you strength for motherhood, regardless of your kids’ ages. Goji berries are no exception. Although they are quite small and fragile, the goji berry health benefits are fairly expansive. You might be surprised at how much your health can be improved, simply by adding some of these berries to your diet. TEXT DR. EMILY HUTCHENS 4 0 April 2016 washingtonFAMILY.com THE NUTRIENT FACTOR We all know our bodies need specific nutrients to stay healthy— that's why eating a balanced diet is so important to our overall wellness. However, no matter how much we try, most of us still struggle to get all of the nutrients we need. One of the goji berry's health benefits is that it supplies more than enough of some of these nutrients. For example, the levels of vitamin C in a daily serving of goji berries are higher than what you'll find in oranges. You'll also find higher levels of iron in the berries than what you'd find in a serving of red meat. Since the berries don't include high levels of cholesterol, they make for a better choice. Vitamin C and iron are not the only essential nutrients you'll find in the berries either. They are also good sources of zinc, selenium and riboflavin. GOJI BERRY ICED TEA • About 1 tablespoon of goji berries per 2 cups of water • Raw honey (to taste) • Squeeze of lemon Put goji berries in pitcher. Pour cold water over berries. Let it steep until the water turns a lovely reddish color and the gojis are plump. Let chill and add ice cubes if preferred. Source: www.ninamanolson.com THE ORAC RATING Unless you are in the health food industry, you may not be familiar with the ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) measurements. This system shows the levels of antioxidants in different foods. The measurements were designed to make comparing different types of foods, particularly superfoods, easier. To ensure fair testing, all of the ORAC measurements are based on 100 grams of the food being measured. For instance, 100 grams of oranges have an ORAC rating of 750. You can compare that to the ratings of strawberries (1,540) or prunes (5,770). Clearly, prunes are going to be much more powerful in terms of their ability to fight off free radicals in your body than are strawberries and oranges. However, one of the impressive goji berry health benefits is that its own measurement is over 25,000 on the ORAC scale. That's almost five times the antioxidant power of 100 grams of prunes and more than 33 times the antioxidant strength of oranges. Pleas Imme e Proof diate ly! If you're looking for a healthier way to get the nutrients you need, or you're simply concerned about fighting off the free radicals which can cause cancer and other serious health problems, you should consider taking advantage of these goji berry health benefits. Here are five tips to help you build that fabulous wardrobe at a fraction of cost. SHOP OFF SEASON: Some of the best deals happen when you scour the racks at your favorite stores off-season. This means shopping for summer clothes in winter and vice versa. Applying this basic shopping principle can save you anywhere from 50-75 percent off the original price. Make sure to seek out classic styles as they always remain on trend. The only downside of shopping off-season is your options may be limited. Often times, these racks have been rummaged through before you have a chance to shop. Calling your favorite stores to find out when they do their off-season mark downs could help you get first dibs. CONSIDER CONSIGNMENT SHOPPING: Consignment shopping, or thrifting, is part of my fashion shopping routine. I love shopping the consignment universe for fabulous vintage and designer items at exceptional steals. While thrifting isn’t for everyone, if you have patience and are willing to leave any preconceived notions behind, you can walk away with unique, budget-friendly fashion finds. Online consignment boutiques like Thredup.com, Therealreal.com, Poshmark.com, Liketwice. com and Threadflip.com have amazing deals and inventory. SHOP RED FIRST: My first stop when I enter a store is the clearance rack. I go straight to those racks seeking out price tags with the red line going straight through the original prices. Many times I fulfill my retail therapy right in the clearance sections, making it easier for me to avoid the rest of the store (and ultimately saving myself from unnecessary impulse spending). 4. INVEST IN STAPLES: You always hear from the fashion gurus, “Invest in staples!” and while it’s essential for your wardrobe, it’s also great for your wallet. Investing in staple must-haves provides more styling flexibility and options in your wardrobe-building process. It also helps curb future spending, because these staples make for more outfit combinations with the items you already own. These essentials include black, single-sole heels, the perfect black blazer, a great pair of jeans, a LBD (little black dress), a midi skirt (hitting right below the knee) and a classic black Starting out with these staple basics gives you the to mix-and-match, while creating the illusion of an expansive wardrobe. 5. SHOP DISCOUNT DESIGNER STORES: If you love bargain shopping like I do, you probably already know your way around discount designer stores. But if not, you might want to consider frequenting some of these discount retail stores (in person or online) for your next shopping spree. like TJMaxx, Bluefly.com, TheOutNet.com, Yoox.com, Marcus Last Call and Marshalls are great bargain stores with fabulous designer brands at exceptional prices. The key to fashion shopping on a budget is to be patient, seek different shopping resources and focus on the classics! Natasha Bernard is a mom, wife and lover of fashionably fabulous style. 1. POSHMARK With Poshmark you can shop, sell, style and party. Poshmark has whatever you’re shopping for with over 5,000 brands at up to 70 percent off retail. You can consign your own closet, get fashion and styling ideas and even hold or attend virtual posh parties that allow users to share and shop together. 2. LETGO Letgo is a fun, unique way to buy and sell a variety of second-hand stuff within your neighborhood. “Letgo” is faster, safer and better than traditional classified ads and lets you easily offer up your items for sale in less than 30 seconds. The app also allows you to share what you’re selling with your email contacts or Facebook friends to get a quicker sell. 3. THREDUP thredUP is a growing online shop to buy and sell like-new women’s and kid’s clothing with over 25,000 brands at up to 90 percent off retail.
